DEPRESSION AND STRESS AFFECTING DIFFERENT YPES OF LEARNERS DURING

ONLINE CLASS AND HOW SOCIAL SUPPORT COULD HELP.

Problem Statement.

Depression and stress among students have been a big topic being discussed in the
apparent time. A journal regarding on this study conducted by apa.org written by Lea
Winerman regarding on the statistics of university student who are stressed out showed a
significant increase of thirty percent rise on students seeking seeking appointments at
counselling centers between 2009 to 2010 and 2014 to 2015 although students enrolment
were only increased by 5 percent during the time. Out of a percentage of 61 percent college
students seeking counselling according to the survey made, 49 percent were depressed and
another 45 percent were stressed out, this also includes 28 percent of those who are affected
by academic performance.

An article by mayoclinic.org regarding on depression states that depression is a mood

disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Whilst an article from
clevelandclinic.org defined stress as the body’s reaction to any change that requires
adjustment or response and how the body reacts to these changes with physical, mental and
emotional response. A journal by Mental Health America (MHA) states that stress can cause
changes in your body and affect overall physical, mental and emotional heatlth. Depression
on the other side is even more serious as it is long-lasting than stress is and it requires
different treatment for it.

When the government implemented Movement restriction order (MCO) on 18th March
2020, the education system was suddenly changed from having a physical class to
implementing an online class. This sudden changes could lead to stress and depression among
students accordingly to the definitions of stress and depression I have stated before.
Therefore, in this paper, I would like to discuss in depth the correlation of stress and
depression among students when online class was implemented.
Aim and Objective.

The aim of this paper is to educate depression and stress hitting students due to the
fact that our education system have been changed drastically from physical and face to face
class to an online class. This paper will also acknowledge the different types of learners and
how this sudden changes would affect them. As we all know there are all four learning
theories which is behaviourism, cognitivism, constructivism and connectivism. In this paper,
I shall discuss about these theories and how students can be affected by them.

The objective of this paper also includes explanation regarding on social support and
how it can help students cater to their depression and stress.
