Tutorial 2, EE 330A: Power Systems

Question 1:
A 15 MVA, 13.6 kV, 60 Hz hydro-generator operates at rated speed and rated terminal voltage.
Given the following reactance data, find the real power output of the generator, neglecting the
voltage drop in the stator windings.
X d  9.864  /phase
X q  8.014  /phase
Again, neglecting the saliency of the rotor, and taking the synchronous reactance to be the
average of the above two reactances, find the approximate value of the real power output.

Question 2:
The generator in question 1 is now loaded with Y-connected resistors of 15 Ω each. The internal
voltage is 13.6 kV line-to-line. Find the new terminal voltage and power output. Disregard
saliency, and assume X s  8.939  /phase. What should be the mechanical power input to the
machine, if the excitation is adjusted to make the terminal voltage equal to the rated value?
What is the new value of the excitation voltage?

Question 3
The generator in question 1 is now connected to an infinite bus having voltage of 13.6 kV (line-
to-line). The connecting link has a reactance of 1.356 Ω. The internal voltage of the generator
is 16.59 kV (line-to-line), and it delivers 10 MW power at the infinite bus. Find (a) the angle
between the internal voltage and generator terminal voltage, (b) the angle between the internal
voltage and the infinite bus voltage, (c) generator output current, and (d) terminal voltage of
the generator.
