II. COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course aims to introduce the essential principles and concepts of management and their
applications in influencing individual and group behaviour in an organisational setting and
demonstrate how important it is for the successful manager to view his or her functional task
from a generalist standpoint. The course provides a general analysis of management, basics of
planning, organising, and controlling, leadership techniques, and interpersonal relations in
business and non‐business organisations.
III. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The course has been designed
1. To help the students understand the skills, functions, and responsibilities of a manager.
2. To learn the tools and techniques needed to perform managerial jobs.
3. To analyse organisational environment and how the environmental forces influence
managerial decision making.
4. To deal with real life organisational situations through case analyses and organisational
studies.
IV. INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this course, students are expected to learn about
1. The boundaries within which corporate managers perform their functions.
2. The evolution of management as an independent body of knowledge.
3. How ethics, culture, and globalisation shape up today’s organisations.
4. The process of managerial decision making.
5. The managerial functions of planning, organising, leading and controlling in managing
organisations for both short and long term achievement of organisational objectives.

Recommended Reading: Hand outs and other study materials shall be provided in due
course.
VI. COURSE FORMAT
Classes will be conducted primarily based on in‐class lectures, question answer sessions, in‐
class written examinations (class test, Mid‐term, and Final), case studies, and group projects.
The examinations will be a combination of objective and descriptive questions. Except for the
class test, all examinations (Mid‐term and Final examinations) shall be administered as per the
university’s academic calendar.
VII. GRADING
1. Class Attendance and Participation (5%): Class attendance is a mandatory requirement of
BRAC University. Students must attend at least 70% classes to be eligible to sit for the final
examination. Refer to the university catalogue for attendance points.
2. Case study (10%): Cases on materials discussed shall be given for individual submission.
Case study requires analysis of the situation, problem identification, devising alternative
solutions, evaluation of alternatives, and coming up with recommendations.
3. Class test (15%): The class test shall be held around 3 weeks into the semester and include
materials covered before the date of the test. The examinations will be a combination of
descriptive and objective questions.
4. Midterm (20%): The Midterm examination shall be held during the midterm week and
include materials covered between the class test and the midterm date. The examinations
will be a combination of descriptive and objective questions.
5. Individual /Group Project/Term paper/Case etc. (10%): The class will be divided into small
groups of 5 per group. Each group will select a moderate to large company/group of
companies, and work on how these organisations practice the four functions of
management (viz. planning, organising, leading, and controlling)
6. Final Exam (40%): The final examination shall be held during the final exam week and shall
cover all post midterm materials. The examinations will be a combination of descriptive and
objective questions.

IX. COURSE POLICIES
1. Instructor’s Expectations of Students:
Students are expected to strive for excellence in acquiring knowledge – through attending
all classes from start to end; participating actively in class discussions; preparing for class
lectures in advance; spending at least two hours for each class‐hour on, self‐study,
completion of assigned tasks and preparation for class, quiz, exam, presentation, etc.; and
completing and submitting required tasks on‐time.
Students are also expected to maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning, be
respectful of others’ opinions and be completely honest by implementing the highest
ethical standards. It is also expected that students will uphold this principle in all their
future endeavours, including their career activities.
2. Academic Integrity:
Although group‐study is encouraged strongly, all students/groups are expected to complete
all assignments individually. As such, one may not share, lend or borrow another student’s
(group’s) work in any manner ‐ either on paper, by computer or by word of mouth. Any
cheating, plagiarism and other forms of scholastic dishonesty or misconduct will result in
the strictest disciplinary action ‐ according to the BRACU regulations (please refer to BRACU
Student’s Handbook).
3. Make‐Up:
No make‐up quiz/exam will be administered and no late homework, assignment, case or
project will be accepted except for conflicts with official university business or extreme
emergencies. In the former case, please notify the instructor (at least) one week in advance;
in the latter case, please inform prior to the exam/quiz or immediately after. Under both
situations, students are expected to provide appropriate and authentic documentation.
4. “I” and “W” Grades:
A grade of “I“ (Incomplete) will be granted only as a result of most extreme circumstances ‐
beyond a student’s control and only after stringent verification of the circumstance and
approval. A grade of “I” is not given in lieu of an “F” or any other passing grade. Any
student who discontinues attending class, and who does not officially drop the course/
withdraw from the university, will receive a grade of “F”.
5. Disability:
Any student who has a disability that prevents the fullest statement of his/her abilities
should contact the instructor personally. All efforts will be made to devise the appropriate
accommodation in order to facilitate student’s successful completion of the course.
