 Informational text is a type of nonfiction that conveys information about the natural or

social world.

 To prepare students for this world, you need to be serious about teaching them to read
and write informational text.

 Reading informational text allows students to develop sophisticated comprehension


skills, build critical content knowledge and vocabulary, and apply higher-order thinking
skills. Challenging informational text may require scaffolding and teaching new reading
strategies so students can access the text. Consider how you could more fully integrate
informational text in your diverse classrooms and how you might assist students’
comprehension of these texts.

Factual texts inform the reader about a particular subject. They should give useful information 
and focus on facts. Examples of factual texts are news reports, interviews, recipes, records of 
history,  instructions, FAQs, etc.

Draw a happy face ( ) if the given example is informational text and sad face (
) if it doesn’t.
