Use Data Analytics to study music streaming patterns

Software Used: Tableau Public

Data Collection: Selected 5 individuals who have diverse music tastes and created playlists
based on the 10 most frequently played songs of each individual.

Problem Statement: Analyse the data to understand a pattern in the person's music preference
& recommend a playlist of songs based on that analysis

Music Attributes:

1. Acousticness: A confidence measure from 0.0 to 1.0 of whether the track is acoustic.
1.0 represents high confidence the track is acoustic. The average value of Acoustic of
all the 5 individual is 0.41

2. Danceability: Danceability describes how suitable a track is for dancing based on a


combination of musical elements including tempo, rhythm stability, beat strength, and
overall regularity. A value of 0.0 is least danceable and 1.0 is most danceable. The
average value of Danceability of all the 5 individual is 0.73

3. Energy: Energy is a measure from 0.0 to 1.0 and represents a perceptual measure of
intensity and activity. Typically, energetic tracks feel fast, loud, and noisy. For
example, death metal has high energy, while a Bach prelude scores low on the scale.

Perceptual features contributing to this attribute include dynamic range, perceived


loudness, timbre, onset rate, and general entropy. The average value of Energy of the
all the 5 individual is 0.62

4. Loudness: The overall loudness of a track in decibels (dB). Loudness values are
averaged across the entire track and are useful for comparing relative loudness of
tracks. Loudness is the quality of a sound that is the primary psychological correlate
of physical strength (amplitude). Values typical range between -60 and 0 db. The
average value of loudness of all the 5 individual is -7.45

5. Valence: A measure from 0.0 to 1.0 describing the musical positiveness conveyed by
a track. Tracks with high valence sound more positive (e.g. happy, cheerful,
euphoric), while tracks with low valence sound more negative (e.g. sad, depressed,
angry). The average value of valence of all the 5 individual is 0.55

6. Beats Per Minute (BPM): The tempo of the song. The overall estimated tempo of a
track in beats per minute (BPM). In musical terminology, tempo is the speed or pace
of a given piece and derives directly from the average beat duration. The average
value of BPM of all the 5 individual 119.32

7. Popularity (Pop.): The higher the value the more popular the song is.
8. Length: The duration of the song. The average length of songs of all the 5 individual
is 7.30 minutes.

Correlation:

Individual 1:

The correlation analysis of Individual 1 shows that there is a strong positive correlation
between LOUD and ENERGY, i.e. if the loudness of song increase the energy of the song
also increases. Another strong positive correlation is between VALANCE and DANCE, i.e.
more the cheerful, happy song is more is the danceability of the song. The individual 1 loves
to hear loud, energetic, happy and cheerful songs.

Individual 2:

The correlation analysis of Individual 2 shows that there is a strong positive correlation
between LOUD and ENERGY, i.e. more the loudness of song more energetic the song will
be. Another strong positive correlation is between VALANCE and DANCE, i.e. more
cheerful, happy song is more is the danceability. And finally, a very positive correlation
between VALANCE and LOUD shows that more the cheerful song is more will be the
loudness. Individual 2 loves to hear loud, energetic and danceable song with the taste of
happiness.

Individual 3:

The correlation analysis of Individual 3 shows a strong positive correlation between


ENERGY and BPM, LOUD and ENERGY, and VALANCE and DANCE. That means if the
loudness of the song increases the energy of the song also increases and thus the beats per
minute of the song will also subsequently increases. The individual 3 likes to hear loud,
energetic, high BPM and danceable songs.

Individual 4:

The correlation analysis of music attributes of songs played by Individual 4 shows that there
is a very strong and positive correlation between LOUD and ENERGY, i.e. the individual 4
like higher loudness and energetic songs.

Individual 5:

The correlation analysis of Individual 5 music attributes shows that there are strong
correlations between DANCE and ENERGY, LOUD and ENERGY, VALANCE and
ENERGY, and VALANCE and DANCE, i.e. higher danceability, loudness and more valence
result in higher energetic song. The individual prefer to listen loud, energetic and cheerful
songs.

Key Findings:

Individual 1:

 Among the given data set, the most popular artist with maximum number of tracks is
Badshah. Out of 10 songs in the playlist, 2 songs are of Badshah. Hence, this shows
that the individual like the song composed by Badshah.
 The most popular song with maximum number of streams is Genda Phool (feat. Payal
Dev) composed by Badshah with 160635 streams.
 The individual loves to hear Indian composed songs with stream 987635, followed by
American songs with stream 90624.
 The increasing stream vs year graph over time in the dashboard shows that the
individual love to listen most recent songs in comparison to old songs. The playlist of
the individual have songs of 2018 to 2020.

Individual 2:

 Among the given data set, there is no popular artist with maximum number of
tracks. That means individual don’t like any single artist.
 The most popular song with maximum number of streams is Break my Heart
composed by Dua Lipa with 85885 streams.
 The individual likes Indian composed songs more with 146021 streams as
compared to American songs with 77282 streams.
 The zig zag line of stream vs time graph shows that individual loves to hear latest
as well as old songs too. The trend shows the songs of 2017, 2018 and 2020 are
more popular than 2019 songs.

Individual 3:

 Among the given data set, the most popular artist with maximum number of tracks is
Badshah. Out of 10 songs in the playlist, 2 songs are of Badshah. Hence, this shows
that the individual like the song composed by Badshah.
 The most popular song with maximum number of streams is Tera Yaar Hoon Main
composed by Arijit Singh with 68567 streams.
 The Individual loves to hear only Indian composed songs.
 The trend of stream vs time graph shows that the individual loves to hear old songs of
2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 as compared to the latest songs of 2020.

Individual 4:

 Among the given data set, the most popular artist with maximum number of tracks are
of Pritam and Vishal-Shekhar. Out of 10 songs in the playlist, 2 songs are of Pritam
and 2 are of Vishal-Shekhar. Hence, this shows that individual like both the artists.
 The most popular song with maximum number of streams is Haan Main Galat
composed by Pritam with 57052 streams.
 The individual likes Indian composed songs more with 322343 streams as compared
to Canadian songs with 150634 streams followed by American songs with 50018
streams.
 The stream vs time graph shows that the individual is not interested in old songs but
love to listen latest songs.

Individual 5:

 Among the given data set, there is no popular artist with maximum number of tracks.
That means individual don’t like any single artist.
 The most popular song with maximum number of streams is Lovely (with Khalid)
composed by Billie Eilish with 75643 streams.
 The individual loves to hear American composed songs more with 349554 streams as
compared to Indian songs with 48888 streams followed by UK with 45889 streams
and Germany with 45454 streams.

 The increasing trend of stream vs time graph shows that the individual gradually loves
to hear latest songs.

Final Conclusion:

The Individual 1 loves to hear high energetic, cheerful, happy and danceable songs.
