Welcome to the vocabulary and phrase Quick Reference Glossary for “Movies”! This feature lists all of the key
vocabulary in alphabetical order (by lesson) for easy review. If you find anything else you don’t know while
learning, please write it down below. :)

Many words and phrases from the Master Class lesson are introduced in earlier lessons, so be sure to review
everything from each video. The words and phrases below may also have additional meanings, so just focus
on what’s written to master the meanings of each as used in the lessons.

Grammar Focus

active verb – verb that specifically describes what the subject of the sentence is doing
Amazon rainforest – The Amazon rainforest, also known as Amazonia, is one of the world’s greatest natural
resources. Because its vegetation continuously recycles carbon dioxide into oxygen, it has been described as
the “Lungs of our Planet”. About 20% of earth’s oxygen is produced by the Amazon rainforest.
bearable – capable of being endured or tolerated
biodiversity – the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem
canopy – the highest layer of branches in a forest or on a tree
connection – a relationship in which a person, thing, or idea is linked or associated with something else.
description – a spoken or written account of a person, object, or event
diverse – showing a great deal of variety; very different
exhausted – very tired
fauna – the animals of a particular region, habitat, or geological period
flora – the plants of a particular region, habitat, or geological period
frustrated – feeling distress and annoyance, especially because of inability to change or achieve something
heavenly – causing or marked by great happiness, beauty, peace
jungle – an area of land overgrown with dense forest and tangled vegetation, typically in the tropics
landscape – the features of a given area of land
linking verb – a verb that connects a subject with a noun or adjective, forming a description
local – belonging or relating to a particular area or neighborhood
logical – characterized by or capable of clear, sound reasoning
perspective – a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view
plumage – a bird’s feathers
resident – a person or thing that lives somewhere permanently or on a long-term basis
so far – up to this time, or up until now
to appear – seem; give the impression of being

to consider – think carefully about something, typically before making a decision
to envy – desire to have a quality, possession, or other desirable attribute belonging to someone else

especially that a product will be repaired or replaced if not of a specified quality and durability

to introduce – to bring something into use or operation for the first time
to link – to make, form, or suggest a connection with or between two things
to turn – change in nature, state, form, or color; become
tour – a journey for pleasure in which several different places are visited
tourist – a person who is traveling or visiting a place for pleasure
tropical – of weather or climate; hot and humid as in the tropics
vibrant – full of energy and enthusiasm
weird – very strange and unusual, unexpected, or not natural
wildlife – wild animals collectively

a friendly face – someone you are already friends with; someone who looks easy to talk to, and friendly
a receptive ear – ready or willing to listen
amiable – having a friendly and pleasant manner
animated – full of life or excitement; lively
anxiety – a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease

conversation partner – a person to talk to
discourse – written or spoken communication or debate
distressed – suffering from anxiety, sorrow, or pain
excursion – a short journey or trip
exotic – from a distant foreign country
genuine – real; authentic
inquisitive – inclined to ask questions
like a fish out of water – a person away from his or her usual environment or activities
lively – active and outgoing
nervous – easily agitated or alarmed; tending to be anxious
out of sorts – not feeling well; grumpy and irritable
potential – capable of being but not yet in existence
self-assured – confident in one’s own abilities or character
serene – calm, peaceful, and untroubled; tranquil
small talk – polite conversation about unimportant or uncontroversial matters

to prove – demonstrate the truth or existence of something by evidence or argument
to purchase – acquire something by paying for it; buy
to require – to have as a requisite or necessity; need or depend on
to scan – to look at something carefully
to sip – drink something by taking small mouthfuls
to stroll around – phrasal verb meaning to walk around casually
to waver – to shake with a quivering motion; become unsteady or unreliable

professional – exhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and generally businesslike manner in the workplace
relaxed – free from tension and anxiety; at ease
self-conscious – uncomfortably conscious of oneself as an object of the observation of others
speech – a talk or public address, or also a written copy of it

Fluency Corner

a quick point – to briefly point out something; This phrase is often used when you are talking about
something other than the primary topic of the conversation.
aggressive – ready or likely to attack or confront
As opposed to X, would you rather do X? – to show two different options
communicate – share or exchange information, news, or ideas
complex – consisting of many different and connected parts
conversational – consisting of or relating to conversation
culture – culture is transmitted, through language, material objects, ritual, institutions, and art, from one
generation to the next
Do go on. – to get back to the previous topic; I’m really interested in that; please continue
Do you go by X? – a way of asking, “Do you have a nickname?”
Do you speak X? – a way to ask if someone speaks a specific language
expressive – effectively conveying thought or feeling
general – affecting the whole or every member of a class or category
gesture – a movement of part of the body, especially a hand or the head, to express an idea or meaning
give me a minute/ give me a moment – please wait for me for a short amount of time
Go ahead. – please continue
he/she was like… – a casual way of saying he/she said
here and now – this specific place and time
How does/did that happen? – phrase used when you’re a little bit confused; a way to ask for clarification
How does/did that work? – phrase used when you’re a little bit confused; a way to ask for clarification
How did you come by X? – to get something, especially something that is hard to get or unusual
How did you get involved in X? – Why are you interested in this thing?; How did you first become
interested?
If you weren’t doing this, what would you do? – fun conversational question to get the other person
thinking and talking more
interested – attention, concern, or curiosity is particularly engaged by something
kinda – slang form of kind of; slightly, maybe
let’s see… – a way to say something while you think about what to say next
nickname – a familiar or humorous name given to a person or thing instead of or as well as the real name
open-ended question – questions that require more thought and more than a simple one-word answer
outgoing – friendly and socially confident
Please continue. – phrase to use when you interrupt someone, but you want them to go back to what they
were talking about
rude – offensively impolite or ill-mannered
self-introduction – where you tell people who you are, what you do, what your interests are, where you are
from, what you have done with your life.
shy – being reserved or having or showing nervousness or timidity in the company of other people
sitcom – a situation comedy show on television, like Friends
specific – clearly defined or identified
Tell me about X. – a great phrase to ask for more information about a specific topic
the snapping of fingers – gesture used if you are trying to remember something

To connect with – to have or establish a rapport or a personal relationship
to cut through – phrasal verb meaning to go through an area instead of going around the edge of it

to generate – cause something to arise or come about
to get to know – phrase meaning to start to be familiar with someone or something
to hit X – to come across something by chance
to interrupt – to do or say something that causes someone to stop speaking
to maintain control – to continue to control
to make a long story short – used to end an account of events quickly; to get to the ending of the story
to open up – phrasal verb meaning to talk freely and openly about something
tricky – requiring care and skill because something is difficult or awkward
trigger – cause an event or situation to happen or exist
typical – the characteristics expected of or popularly associated with a particular person, situation, or thing
ultimate – the last or the highest or the best

watch it grow – a phrase used to describe watching passively as something continues to mature, develop,

Where is your family from? – a way to ask about the country of origin of one’s family
Why X? – An easy way to ask how someone became interested in something.
you know – it’s the short form of asking if someone understands what you’re trying to say

anime – a style of Japanese film and television animation, typically aimed at adults as well as children
bitterly – hard to bear; grievous; distressful; causing pain; piercing; stinging
camp counselor – a supervisor of campers or activities at a summer camp
communal – shared by all members of a community; for common use
dorm – short for a dormitory; a building where students live and sleep
excitement – a feeling of great enthusiasm and eagerness
