Module 2 Lesson 2
I. DREAMING HIGH
This lesson highlights one of the cultural promises that
we still practice today. This will be a quick reminder that
culture endures in different ways and that it creates a huge
impact that still affects our daily living even at the most
modern times.
II. COMPETENCY

Use conditionals in expressing arguments.


Objectives:
a. Differentiate present real and unreal conditional sentences.
b. Identify the correct form of the verb to be used in the sentence.
c. Use present unreal conditional in expressing meaningful
utterances.

III. VOCABULARY LIST


The following vocabulary words are found in the sentences and
directions in this module. Read the following words, along with their
meanings.
1. sunscreen – noun: a substance formulated to prevent sunburn,
skin cancers, and other conditions caused by excessive exposure
to the sun, usually by absorbing and reflecting ultraviolet radiation
2. flawless – adjective: a substance formulated to prevent sunburn,
skin cancers, and other conditions caused by excessive exposure
to the sun, usually by absorbing and reflecting ultraviolet radiation
3. guardian – noun: a person who is entrusted by law with the care of the
person or property, or both, of another, as a minor or someone legally
incapable of managing his or her own affairs
4. depict – verb: to represent by or as if by painting; portray
5. luggage – noun: suitcases, trunks, etc.; baggage

• Second conditionals – If I had more money I would change my

• Third Conditionals – If Mary had studied harder she would have

didn’t pass her exams.

• How to Form Present Unreal Conditionals


o Use the simple past in the if clause. If the verb is be, use were
for all persons. Use could, might, or would + base form of the
given verb in the result clause.
▪ Example:
• If I owned a car, I would drive to work. But I don't
own a car.
• She would travel around the world if she had more
money. But she doesn't have much money.
• I would read more if I didn't watch so much TV.
• Mary would move to Japan if
she spoke Japanese.
• If they worked harder, they would earn more
money.
• A: What would you do if you won the lottery?
B: I would buy a house.
• A: Where would you live if you moved to the
U.S.?
B: I would live in Seattle.
• The words "could," should," "might" and "ought
to" include conditional, so you cannot combine
them with "would."

• IMPORTANT : Only use "If"
• Only the word "if" is used with the present unreal
conditional because you are discussing imaginary
situations. "When" cannot be used.

• I would buy that computer when it were cheaper. Not

Directions: Answer the following sentences by encircling the appropriate


form of the verb in both clauses.

Directions: Read the conversation below between Michael and Sharon.


Complete it by giving the appropriate form of the words in the parentheses.

Michael: Sharon, I am having some problems at work, and I was wondering if you
might be able to give me some advice.

Sharon: Sure, what's the problem?

Michael: The computer sales business is more difficult than I thought. When
