Statement of Learning Outcomes:
The level of formality is an important consideration in communicative exchanges. It
determines how much information will be divulged by the participants, as well as the intimacy of
communication that take place. Thus it is important for us to understand the various speech styles
that we can take part in.

2. Work in Pairs
The students get a partner and will act out the following situations:
A conversation with your mother
A small talk with your best friend
A chat with a student from the higher grades at your school
A consultation with your adviser
A student asking for directions from the security guard of the school.
3. Evaluation
The students will identify which type of speech style is used by their fellow classmates
for each situation.
