PROGRAMME BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering – Full-Time

MODULE NAME Structural Analysis II

TIME 9:30 – 12:30 hrs DURATION 3 Hours

NO. OF 6 NO. OF QUESTIONS 5

QUESTIONS SET TO BE ATTEMPTED

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES

There are 2 sections in this paper : Section A and Section B.

Section A consists of TWO (2) questions. Answer ALL questions from Section A.

Section B consists of FOUR (4) questions. Answer ANY THREE (3) questions
from Section B.

Answer FIVE (5) Questions in all.

Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are attached.

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS II – CIVE2006Y(3)

SECTION A

Answer ALL questions from this section.

Question 1

The rigidly-connected frame shown in figure 1 is fixed at A and E, hinged at F and

rigidly connected at B and C and has an overhang CD. The beam BC carries a
uniformly distributed load of 15 kN/m and a point load of 10 kN and the overhang
a point load of 10 kN at D.

The relative second moment of areas of all the members are as shown in the figure
and all the members have the same modulus of elasticity.

Using the moment distribution method, sketch the bending moment diagram for the
beam BC and the overhang CD, showing the important values for these members.

[26 marks]

Question 2

The pin-jointed steel truss shown in figure 2 has pinned support at A and roller
support at E. The truss is subjected to a vertical load of 20 kN at node C.

All the members have the same cross-sectional area of 1250 mm2 and the same
Young’s Modulus of Elasticity of 200 kN/mm2.

Using the strain energy method, determine the horizontal displacement of node C.

SECTION B

Answer ANY THREE (3) questions from this section.

Question 3

(a) Explain the differences between a 2-pinned and a 3-pinned arch. [4 marks]

(b) A two-pinned parabolic arch of 20 m span and 4 m rise carries a uniformly

distributed load of 50 kN/m on the left half of the span, as shown in figure 3.
Assuming that the second moment of area at any point of the arch is
proportional to the secant of the slope, calculate the horizontal reaction at the
supports.
[12 marks]

Question 4

(a) Describe the differences between an under-reinforced and an over-reinforced

section. [5 marks]

(b) An hexagonal slab of equal side lengths of 3 m is simply supported at the

edges and is isotropically reinforced, as shown in figure 4. The slab carries an
ultimate uniform load of 12 kN/m2.

Using the yield-line theory, calculate the ultimate moments of resistance of

the slab. [11 marks]

Question 5

The pin-jointed steel frame ABCD, as shown in figure 5, carries a vertical point load
of 10 kN at node D. All the members have the same cross-sectional area of 175 mm2
and same Young’s Modulus of Elasticity of 205 kN/mm2

(a) Calculate the degree of redundancy of the pin-jointed frame. [2 marks]

(b) Calculate, using the flexibility method of structural analysis, the force in the
diagonal member BD. [14 marks]

Question 6

(a) Define the term influence line. [2 marks]

(b) Draw the following influence lines for the overhanging beam ABCD shown in
figure 6.
i) Reactions at both supports,
ii) shear force and bending moment at E and F, and
iii) shear force just to the left and just to the right of the support B.
[12 marks]

(c) A uniformly distributed load of 10 kN/m and length 0.75 m crosses the beam
from left to right.

Using the relevant influence lines, calculate the maximum shear force and
bending moment at F. [2 marks]
