The Barrier-Free Campus Project

A team from the Architectural Engineering Department, led by
Mariam Hassan and Traudel Funke and supported by 12 AE-
alumni worked for 10 months to deliver this project in three
phases. In the first phase, the team surveyed every building and
outdoor space of the university campuses, identifying areas of
non-compliance with universal design codes, and recommending
measures to achieve compliance. The second phase was to create
a masterplan in which all outdoor areas and building access
were fully compliant. Stage three involved adapting all indoor
areas to achieve compliance with universal building codes, and
included the design and documentation of detailed construction
solutions, along with their specifications and a bill of quantities.
