Element Configuration:
Licenses Nera Networks AS
A Network Element can have several licenses installed, enabling different functions, such
as transmission capacity, PXC, VLAN support, .. Etc.
The License Key is a 40 character alpha numeric string and depends on the elements’
serial number and MAC address. When a new license key/Replacement Key is obtained,
copy it to the License Key tab and click on Apply.

Element Configuration:
SNMP settings Nera Networks AS
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is an application layer protocol that facilitates the
exchange of management information between network devices. SNMP enables network administrators
to manage network performance and find and solve network problems.
SNMP is a simple request/response protocol. The network-management system issues a request, and
managed devices return responses.

Software in the Element Nera Networks AS
When new software is downloaded to the element it will initially be set in inactive state (Active no).
Click the "Switch software" button to swap the Software Package. The system will perform a warm start when software is
swapped.
Note! If only one software package is present on the Network Element, only one table will be visible in "Overview" in the
screenshot above.
Note! Bit error may occur when software packages are switched.
Note! It is recommended that you clear the file cache in your web browser after a software switch. The reason for this is to
make sure that the browser receives the correct files.
Complete state
If all the required files are present and the checksum is OK, the software package is in Complete state.
Compatible state
Each software package contain a list of hardware compatibility requirements. This consists of a list of hardware modules with
an accompanying version range. If all the detected modules in the system are found in this list, and their versions fall within
the specified ranges, the software package is compatible.

Configuration Backup
(Upload from Element) Nera Networks AS
Backup: Makes a backup file of the SU configuration and stores this locally on the Network Element.
Restore: Restores the SU configuration from a backup file stored locally on the Network Element
Upload: Makes a backup file of the SU configuration and stores the file on your Personal computer or
PC server.
20
Configuration Download (to Element) Nera Networks AS
Download: Downloads a backup file to the SU from your Personal computer or PC server.

IFU Replacement Nera Networks AS
This function is used when a faulty IFU is physically replaced by a new IFU. The configuration must
have been uploaded from the replaced IFU (or another one with the same configuration), using the
configuration upload feature under the Miscellaneous tab.
The configuration from the replaced IFU will be downloaded to the new one. In addition the licenses
from the replaced IFU will be temporary enabled for a maximum period of 90 days in addition to any
existing licenses on the new IFU. These temporary licenses can be used while ordering new license keys
from Nera CSS.
NOTE! Please upgrade the software and set the correct date/time on the new IFU BEFORE
downloading the uploaded configuration file.

E1/T1 Interface Ports (Fixed Modulation) Nera Networks AS
E1 characteristics
The IFU has 20xE1 interfaces as standard. 2xE1 is provided on each connector (RJ-45). E1#1-10 is available through standard E1 patch
cables. E1#11-20 is available through a special 2E1-cable. E1capacity over the link is selectable from 0-20 x E1.
E1 Interfaces
Electrical Interface: 20xE1. Interface parameters acc to ITU-T Rec. G.703:
Bit rate: 2.048 Mb/s ± 50 ppm
Line code: HDB3
Impedance: 120 Ω balanced
(240 Ω per IFU in HSB configuration)
Maximum att. of input signal at 1.024 MHz: 6 dB
Connector type: RJ-45, 2xE1 per RJ-45 connector

E1/T1 Interface PRBS Tester Nera Networks AS
A PRBS signal can be inserted instead of the regular traffic to test the LIU E1/T1.
Each E1/T1 port contains two Generator and two Checkers. Only one Checker/Generator is
active at the time. When one checker is enabled, by clicking the arrow on the block diagram,
the other will automatically be disabled. The red arrow on the diagram indicates the Generator.
The green arrow is the active Checker. The black arrow is the inactive Checker.
The Generator is started by clicking the Generator arrow on the block diagram. The arrow
turns red.
Note! When the Generator is activated, traffic on this port will be broken.
Activate the uppermost Checker, to test the Customer Interface side of the port.
Note! An external loop must be placed at the Customer interface side.
Activate the rightmost Checker, to test the IFU interface side of the port.
Note! An external loop must be activated at the IFU interface side.

Ethernet Ports Nera Networks AS
Ethernet characteristics
Eth#1, Eth#2, Eth#3 Interfaces
Electrical interface: 3x10/100Base-TX, IEEE 802.3, Full Duplex
Connectors: 3xRJ-45
LEDs: One for each of the three ports.
The EBUS#1 interface is carrying an additional Ethernet port (port#4) that may be used for user- or management – traffic by
using an appropriate cable (See EBUS port detail).
The Ethernet ports are configurable to:
• Auto-Negotiation or 10/100BASE-TX – half/full duplex
• Flow control for full duplex connections according to IEEE 802.3x (see 5.3.4). Flow control is
available in maximum throughput mod. Ethernet flow control can be enabled when QoS is disabled. MAC control frames are
used to carry the PAUSE commands.

Switch Options Nera Networks AS
MAC learning
MAC-learning can be enabled or disabled. MAC address table size is 1024 addresses. Address table aging is selectable
between ON or OFF.
L2 switch modes
The built-in switch can be set up in three different modes:
Mode 1: (factory default)
Eth#1 preconfigured for NMS-traffic and Eth#2&3 for user traffic. In this mode only untagged frames will be accepted.
VLAN-tagged frames will be discarded. Switching between Eth#2, Eth#3 and Eth-radio-port is based on MAC-address.
Management traffic is carried in-band in but internally separated from user traffic.
Mode 2: L2-switch mode.
All ports are transparent for tagged and untagged frames. Switching is based on MAC-address for both user- and
management- traffic.
Mode 3 VLAN switch mode:
VLAN switching based on the VLAN Identifier (VID) is supported as an option. Each port of the Ethernet switch (Eth#1,
Eth#2, Eth#3 and radio) can be configured for VLAN membership and the ports can be configured as trunk-port (accepting
only tagged frames) or access-port (tagging ingress packets and stripping egress packets). On Access-ports VLAN-id and
VLAN-priority are configurable. Tagged packets coming in on an Access-port will be discarded. The number of active VLAN
supported is 64.

EBUS characteristics
Two EBUS interfaces are prepared for easy interconnection of E1s and control signals between IFUs.
There are two EBUS interfaces available on front of the IFU on two separate RJ-45 connectors. The
EBUS#1 interface is carrying an additional Ethernet port (port#4) that may be used for user- or
management – traffic by using an appropriate cable. No traffic/port LED is available for this Ethernet
port (port#4). E1s on EBUS#1 and EBUS#2 are enabled by the PXC license.
