SCIENCE 10
UNIT 1
LESSON 1 (PLATE TECTONICS)

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
1. Explain the theory of continental movement and plate tectonics
2. Use logic and the evidence to reconstruct the position of large islands and continents as they
appeared 220 million years ago
3. Describe how scientists use different kinds of evidence to form theories about the formation of
the continents.

II. Read/Watch

Watch the video “Plate Tectonics Theory Lesson 1”

III. Check Your Understanding

*Answer the following questions and activity in your Science Journal (Blue large notebook – used
in College)

1. What is Plate Tectonics Theory and Continental Movement?

2. What do you think will happen if the Earth has no tectonic plates?

IV. What to Do
(Science Journal)

Using a photocopy of the world map, roughly cut out the continents and fit them back together in
the shape of Pangaea. Make sure to cut off India from Asia as it was once separated. Glue the
prices into your science journal. Discuss how your supercontinent looks and how it may represent a
reformed Pangaea; include a short narrative explaining why scientists believe that some 250 – 300
million years from now, the seven continents will move towards each other and form a
supercontinent.

V. Reflection

What have you learned from this lesson? What part of this lesson you find hard to understand?
