Bilging Side Midship Compartment

1 When a side midship compartment is bilged, the following will take place:

a) an increase in mean draft

b) the vessel will list towards the side of the bilge compartment

Figure on the left.

Plan view of a box-shaped vessel waterplane

of length ‘L’ , breadth ‘B’ bilged to one side
of a midship compartment.
Dimension of the bilged compartment are
length ‘l’ and breadth ‘B/2’.
CL – centreline before bilging
OZ – centreline after bilging
x
‘x’ – separation between CL and OZ

The following example will illustrate how you could easily calculate the angle of list
due to bilging of a side midship compartment.

Ex: A box-shaped vessel, L100 m, B8 m, draft 4 m is bilged. The bilged

compartment has a length of 5 m and extended from the centreline to the side
of the vessel on the starboard side. The compartment was empty and open to
the top. Calculate the angle of list. (KG 3 m)

O C

B WPA before bilging = L x B =100 x 8 = 800 sq m

WPA of bilged compartment = l x b = 5 x 4 = 20 sq m
Intact WPA = 800 – 20 = 780 sq m.

To find ‘x’ (GY):

Area dist of centroid moment

from ship side
x
800 4m 3200
- 20 2m - 40
780 3160

dist of centroid after bilging from ship side (stb)

B/2 = 3160/780 = 4.05 m

therefore, ‘x’ (GY) = 4.05 – 4 = 0.05 m

L l

To find IOZ :

Iside before bilging = LB3/3 = 100 x 83/3 = 17067

I(bilged compartment) = lb3/3 = 5 x 43/3 = 107

I(side after bilging) = 17067 – 107 = 16960

IOZ = 16960 – (780 x 4.052) theorem of parallel axes

= 4166.05

To find YMb :

L x B x di = L x B x db – l x b x db
100 x 8 x 4 = 100 x 8 x db – 5 x 4 x db

db = 3200/780 = 4.103 m
New KB = 4.103/2 = 2.052 m

Z L BMb = Ioz /V = 4166.05/3200 =1.302 m

KMb = 2.052 + 1.302 = 3.354 m

YMb = KMb – KG = 3.354 – 3 = 0.354 m

To find list :

Tan list = GY/YMb = 0.05/0.354 = 0.14124

List = 8.04 degs to stb.
