Instructions:
a. Answer ALL questions in this paper.
b. All work done should be clearly shown.
c. Write your name in every page of your answer sheet.

1. Use a non-programmable calculator to calculate the following:

i.
√3 (0.3854)(12.48)2 , correct to seven significant figures.
( 0.04382 )4 ( √5 631.7)

1+ √3 0.0075
ii.
1−√3 0.0075

2 −3

iii.
( 3

−5
( 0.0048 ) + ( 6.45 )
)
2. (a) prove that:
i) coshx + sinhx=e x
ii) coshx −sinhx=e− x
Hence or otherwise show that cosh 2 x −sinh 2 x =1
(b) Show that cosh−1 x=¿(x + √ x 2−1)

3. A special diet for laboratory animals is to contain at least 480 units of vitamins, 110 units
of minerals and 560 units of calories. There are two mixtures of the diet available,
mixture A and mixture B. 1 gram of mixture A contains 8 units of vitamins, 1 unit of
minerals and 4 units of calories. 1 gram of mixture B contains 3 units of vitamins, 1 unit
of minerals and 7 units of calories. Mixture A costs 40/= per gram, while mixture B costs
60/= per gram.
a) How many grams of each mixture should be used to satisfy the requirement of
each diet at a minimum cost?

b) What is the cost of the cheapest diet?

4. By considering the following table of distribution

a. Mean
b. Mode
c. Median

5. (a). Let E be the set of all positive integers less than 50 and A and B be the subset of E
as follows. A is a subset of E whose elements are multiples of 5. B is a subset of E
whose elements are multiples of 7.
i. List all elements of sets A , B , A ∩ B∧ A ∪ B
ii. Describe in words the members of the set A ∩ B
iii. Find n ( A ) , n ( B ) ,∧n( A ∪ B). Hence verify that:
n ( A ∪ B )=n ( A ) +n ( B )−n( A ∩B).
(b). Use the Algebra laws of set to simplify ( A−B) ∪ A.
