Meaning, Objectives and Scope of educational Psychology
The word psychology is derived from Greek word psycho & logos.
‘Psycho’ means “soul” and ‘logos’ means “science”. The science of
soul.
First Stage: “study of the soul”
Second Stage: “study of the mind”
Third Stage: William James (1890) as the “Study of
Consciousness”
Fourth Stage: “Study of total Behaviour” (consciousness and
unconsciousness).
Today Psychology is scientific method of collecting data about
individual and groups to analyze and predict their behavior.

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior.


Psychology is a complex discipline and includes many sub-fields of
study such areas as human development, sports, health, clinical,
social behavior and cognitive processes.
Educational Psychology consists of two words Psychology and
Education. While General Psychology is a pure science, Educational
Psychology is its application in the field of education with the aim of
socializing man and modifying his behavior.

Stephen – ―Educational Psychology is the systematic


study of the educational growth and development of a
child.
Judd – ―Educational Psychology is the Science which
explains the changes that take place in individuals as
they pass through the various stages of development.
Peel- ―Educational Psychology is the science of
Education.

are:
1. The Learner
2. The Learning Process
3. The Learning Situation
4. The Teaching Situation
5. Evaluation of Learning Performance

Objectives educational Psychology

Educational psychology aims


1. At the harmonious growth and rightful conduct of the
children .
2. the development of ‘wholesome personality’ and
‘continuous growth’.
3. At helping the teacher in providing facts and
generalisation in his task of assisting the child to develop
the harmonious personality.

Objectives educational Psychology
A few of the specific aims and objectives are discussed herewith.
(1) developing right attitudes in the teacher about the educational
problems.
(2) Educational psychology aims at assisting the teacher to organize
the material which to be taught to the child.
(3) studying heredity growth and maturation,
(4) creating positive attitude towards learning.
(5) helping the teacher to understand his own task.
(6) to help pupils to learn more effectively both in and out of class.
Objectives educational Psychology

(7) providing proper method of teaching.


(8) Conducting research
(9) application of research findings in the learning situation itself.
(10) methods of measuring and evaluating the achievements of the pupils
objectively with pure objectively.
(11) to guide the administrators in the organisation and administration of the
educational instruction and to provide a scientific basis for the supervision of
instruction.
(12) helping the teacher to provide proper guidance programme in the school
having thorough knowledge of individual difference.
Methods and technique of education psychology
OBSERVATION METHOD
• Seeing things as they are in their natural setting.
• Overt behaviour of person in appropriate situations.
• Measurement without instrument.
TYPES: 1. Participant observation. 2. Non-participant observation.
3. Structured observation. 4. Unstructured observation.
MERITS: 1. Children of all ages. 2. No special tool. 3. Adaptable both
to individual and groups.
DEMERITS: 1. Personal prejudices and bias of the observer. 2.
Records not written with 100% accuracy. 3. Reveals overt behavior
only.
Methods and technique of education psychology

EXPERIMENTAL METHOD
• Most objective and scientific method for studying behavior.
• Cause and effect relationship.
• Experiment conducted in a laboratory or classroom or other field situations.
MERITS: • Most objective and systematic method of getting reliable data.
• Findings are open to critical examination and verification.
• Allows maximum control over the phenomena under investigation.
DEMERITS: • Costly and time-consuming method.
• Extremely difficult to control all other causative factors except the one under
study

INTERVIEW METHOD
• It provides an opportunity for getting information directly from the subject
about his behaviour in face-to-face contact or relationship.
STEPS • Preparation for interview.
• Taking an interview.
• Closure of the interview.
MERITS: Enable teacher to tackle everyday classroom problems. Superior data
collecting device. Creates friendly atmosphere.
DEMERITS: It is subjective, artificial, interpretation is difficult.
Methods of Educational Psychology

INTROSPECTION
Self-observation.
looking within, looking inward.
Looking within, observes, analyses and reports his own feelings.
MERITS: Economical method, does not involve apparatus or laboratory for its
use. Used at anytime.
DEMERITS: Highly subjective. Hide facts. Abnormal individuals cannot be
introspected.
