d- block Elements --- previous years Board paper questions

1. Explain the following

i) Cr2+ is reducing in nature, while with same d configuration,(d 4) Mn3+ is
oxidizing.
ii) In transition series of metals, the metal which exhibits the greatest
number of oxidation state is in the middle of the series.
iii) Cu(1) is not stable in an aqueous solution/
iv) Unlike Cr3+, Mn2+, Fe3+ and the subsequent other M2+ ions of the 3d series
of elements, the 4d and 5d series do not form stable cationic species.
v) Transition metals and their compounds are generally found to be as good
catalyst.
vi) Metal-metal bonding is more frequent for the 4d and 5d series of
transition metals than that for 3d series.
vii) Transition elements and their compound generally exhibit paramagnetic
behavior.
viii) The chemistry of actinoids is not so smooth as that of lanthanoids.
ix) Mn(II) undergoes disproportionation reaction easily.
x) C0(II) easily oxidized in presence of strong ligands.
xi) Sc salts are white in colour.
xii) The lowest oxide of transition metals are basic, while the highest is
amphoteric.
xiii) The enthalpy of atomization of transition element is high.
xiv) E0 (M2+/M) value for Cu is high.
xv) Sc is regarded as a transition metal, while zinc is not.
xvi) The transition metals have great tendency to form complex compounds
xvii) There is a gradual decrease in size transition elements in a series with
increasing atomic number.
xviii) Lanthanum (z=59) and Lutetium (z=71) do not show colouration in
solution.
xix) There is a general increase in density of the element from Titanium to
copper.
xx) There occurs a much more frequent metal-metal bonding in compounds
of heavy transition elements.
xxi) The members of the actiniod series exhibits larger number of oxidation
states than corresponding members of the lanthanoid series.
