NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY TIRUCHIRAPPALLI

END SEMESTER EXAMINATION - JAN. 2020 SESSION

Set - C
DEPARTMENT : Mechanical Engineering
DATE & TIME OF EXAM : 08.08.2020 & 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
SUB CODE : MEPC14 ICE DURATION: 02:00 Hrs

FACULTY NAME : Dr.A.Gopikrishnan

Note to Student:
1. Make sure the ‘Declaration and statement of authorship’ is uploaded along
with the answer sheet as cover sheet (First Sheet)
2. TIME MANAGEMENT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY
3. Mention the question set name in the first page (top right corner) of the
answer sheet.
4. Submit the answers on time through institute portal only.
5. Question should be answered in order.

6 * 5 = 30 marks

Explain the different classification of errors in the measurement system with necessary
1. diagrams and how to minimize the errors in the measurement system?

2. Briefly explain the principle, working of a transducer which measures vibration with neat
diagram. Mention the applications.

i. Identify the input signal whose pictorial representation is shown in figure.

3.

Figure : Pictorial representation

ii. Derive the expression for the second order system with over damped and apply the
input signal as shown in figure.
d2y dy
A system is given by the differential equation 2  4  8 y  8 x .Where y is the output,
4. dt dt
x is the input. Determine all time domain specifications for unit step input.

i. Identify the flowmeter which is based on principle - “The size of restriction is adjusted
by an amount necessary to keep the pressure differential constant when the flow rate
5. changes and the amount of adjustment required is proportional to the flow rate”.
ii. Explain the construction, working of the above flowmeter with neat diagram. Discuss
the advantages and disadvantages of flowmeter.

Consider an electromagnetic flow meter which is used to measure volumetric flow of a

process fluid in a pipe of 60 mm dia. The velocity profile is symmetrical and can be
assumed uniform. The flux density in the liquid is 0.1 Wb/m2. The output from the flow
meter is given to an amplifier of gain 1000 and impedance between the electrodes is 275
KΩ. The input impedance of the amplifier is 275 KΩ as shown in figure. Find the average
velocity of the liquid when the P-P voltage at the amplifier output is 0.3 V.
