1. INTRODUCTION
This work consists mainly for rock filling and backfilling the excavated sites with the
required filling materials. At certain heights of the excavation, certain volumes of
backfilling materials will be used, for sub-base, base and surfacing. This will be
authorized by senior engineer and site engineer.
2. OBJECTIVE
This method statement covers rock filling and backfilling on excavated work site of
the CW2 sector by CWYC, from Henganofi Bridge to Mangiro Bridge and Miunde
Bridge to Kagamuka, Mt Hagen. The purpose of the backfilling is to fill up the trench
or foundation to help protect roadways, walkways, and other structures by using
mixture of soil, rocks and stones, for the rock fill, it is to build embankments and to
allow a steeper angle in forming road embankments in comparison with the earth fill
so that it results in small amount of fill. This saves construction cost.
This detail guide will provide the clear steps undertake to complete the process of the
site activity in a safe systematic and efficient manner in compliance to statutory and
environment requirements.
3. Rockfilling
CWYC do rock filling when building road embankments to allow steeper angle in
forming road embankment when compared with earth fill so that it results in a small
amount of fill. Rock fill will be done on work site where there is a land fall on sites and
excavated sites. The line of work will be instructed by the site civil engineer.
4. Backfilling
Upon the supervision of site engineer, CWYC will carry out backfilling works on excavated
sites. Backfilling is the process of putting soil back into a trench or foundation once
excavation and relative work has been completed. The backfill process requires skills and
heavy equipment as well as knowledge of the specifications, contract requirements and soil
conditions. The purpose of backfilling the excavated site for the road is to level up the
excavated trench and to give stabilize the soil stability to the construction site.
