ARE YOU EGG-CITED TO BOTTLE?

Materials Needed
 Hard Boiled Egg (shell removed)
 Erlenmeyer Flask
 Match

NOTE OF SAFETY: Because the experiment involves fire, adult supervision is required. Please take the
appropriated measures to ensure everyone stays safe.

Objectives
 Determine the relationship among temperature, pressure and volume of gases
 Develop a sense of curiosity that leads to developing observation skills.

Procedures:
1. Place the glass bottle on the table.
2. Set the egg on the neck of the bottle to demonstrate that the egg cannot be pushed into the bottle (this is
because the air inside is trapped).
3. Light 3 matches at once and drop them into the bottle.
4. Quickly place the egg over the mouth of the bottle. The egg will get sucked into the bottle.
5. To get the egg out of the bottle, turn the bottle upside down and blow into it, so that the egg acts as a
one-way valve. The increased air pressure in the bottle will cause the egg to pop back out.

GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. Draw a diagram of the egg-bottle setup a) before the matches were lit b) after the matches were dropped
2. What do you think will happen if you put a peeled hardboiled egg on the bottle opening when you put lit
matches inside the bottle? What can you say about the pressure of the gas?
3. What can you say about three temperature of a gas inside the bottle when you put lit matches inside it? What
do you think will happen to the volume of a gas inside the container?
