Introduction

Attention-Getter: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has become an outstanding

public health care issue mainly reported among children at an alarming rate.

Summary: In Scott Kaufman’s (2014) article on The Creative Gifts’ of ADHD, he discusses the

abilities and talents of children who are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder

(ADHD). Kaufman provides several case studies that support the argument that individuals with

ADHD characteristics mostly attain higher levels of creative thought and fulfillment than

individuals without these traits.

Thesis Statement: However, there is a great need for a wide discussion on how the talents and

abilities of the individuals with ADHD can be recognized, developed, and mentored., as his

discussion of the creative traits and thoughts of the ADHD individuals is too shallow to be used

in their development.

Body Paragraphs

Topic Sentence (1st supporting point): Baseless claim by Kaufman on the ADHD individuals’

desirable traits such as creative thought and are far much better in creativity than normal people.

Support (1st supporting point):

 This claim is juxtaposed on a baseless front. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

(CDC), has recommended thorough research to be conducted aimed at expanding and

improving the knowledge that will help in resource development to help ADHD people.

 There are different symptoms for children with ADHD. CDC says, “ADHD can cause

problems in how well children do in school, in their ability to make and keep friends,

inattention, and in how they function in society” (Pastor, 2015).

 An individual who is not attentive and a poor listener cannot be very creative.

Topic Sentence (2nd supporting point): Poor correlation between ADHD individuals’ common

traits and normal individuals without first defining and explaining what is ADHD, its symptoms,

and signs.

Support (2nd supporting point):

 Discussing several signs of ADHD would have helped in bringing out the common traits

between the ADHD positive and ADHD negative individuals.

 “To compare and contrast between ADHD traits with the normal traits of people,

different symptoms which include Hyperactivity, inattention and impulsivity must be

elaborated into detail” (Sibley,2012).

 Focusing on these symptoms, it will be wrong for Kaufman to compare them with

creative thoughts.

Topic Sentence (3rd supporting point): More packaged and already concluded study that does

not portray any kind of open discussion and free flow of ideas portraying poor research

approaches.

Support (3rdsupporting point):

RESEARCH ESSAY OUTLINE 4

 The idea has no evidence-based research since the National Institute of Mental Health

invalidates the claim by Kaufman and talks of the individuals to be “inattentive,

impulsive and unfocused on motor activity” (Clark, et al., 2017).

 ADHD individuals can maintain inner imagination, fantasies, and daydreams which

translate to creativity (Kaufman, 2014).

 A person with these traits cannot have a creative thought.

 According to Ahmann, (2017), “there are better intervention and treatment mechanisms

that can be adopted for individuals with ADHD if at all each patient is observed at a

personal stance".

 Though there are common symptoms for people with ADHD but might not be reported

across all the patients.

Conclusion

Generally, Kaufman’s sentiments have some instances of truth but his overgeneralization

without presenting the right premises for his argument makes the study flop and lacks

compelling abilities to the readers. To identify the abilities of ADHD individuals, detailed

research is required to analyze the common traits and the best activity that suits them with little

or no struggle. The treatment process is not based on classwork alone but it focuses on other

aspects of life such as creativity index.

Memorable Statement

Since Kaufman's discussion does not capture the common symptoms of ADHD, then his

research is a mere critique of the treatment processes adopted by health care providers and other

specialists and gives zero insights for intervention improvements.
