Introduction to Computing
1st Semester

Mission: The Luis H. Dilanco Sr. Foundation College, Inc. (LHDSFCI) shall provide high quality education and training to its students at
affordable cost for enhanced labor productivity and responsible citizenship. It shall inculcate sense of nationalism and patriotism,
and readiness to global competition. It shall also focus on research and development undertakings.

Vision: The Luis H. Dilanco Sr. Foundation College, Inc. (LHDSFCI) shall be a center on excellence in Science, Technology, Business and
Teacher Education in Camarines Sur. It shall render teaching, research and extension services to its clientele thereby providing
additional impetus to the socio-economic growth and development of the Province.

II. Course Description

This course provides an overview of the Computing Industry and Computing profession, including Research and Applications in different fields; an
Appreciation of Computing in different fields such as Biology, Sociology, Environment and Gaming; an Understanding of ACM Requirements; an
Appreciation of the history of computing; and Knowledge of the Key Components of Computer Systems (Organization and Architecture), Malware,
Computer Security, Internet and Internet protocols, HTML4/5 and CSS.

Knowledge: The Louiesians actuates the gift of education as an arm to gain new knowledge and understanding.
Skills: The Louiesians possess the necessary skills to perform the tasks in the real world of work.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes:

After successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

 Understand and discuss the history and evolution of computers.


 Understand how hardware and software function in a computer.
 Identify the different types and sizes of computers.
 Understand how a computer works.
 Explain the differences between systems and application software.
 Understand the function of a network, a network Operating System and identify different types of networks.
 Understand the different types of application software and their usage.
 Understand what is a program and the development and use of programming languages.
 Understand the Information Systems and the System Development Life Cycle.
 Understand and discuss issues of ethics, privacy, integrity as related to computers and the laws pertaining to these issues.

VI. Course Policy:

 Attendance will be checked by the instructor every meeting.


 The grace period for late comers would be 15 minutes. Beyond that, the student will be considered absent.
 Three instances of tardiness would be equivalent for one absent.
 If a student is scheduled to do an oral presentation but failed to come on time, the class will not wait for that student and that student will
loss the chance to report unless he/she made prior arrangement or notice regarding his/her absence or tardiness.
 Term paper, projects, research works or artifacts/portfolios must be strictly submitted as scheduled.
 Failure to submit them on the scheduled deadline would mean a failing grade and would no longer be accepted.
 A student who failed to take a periodical examination will be given a chance to take a special examination. However, after the lapse of the
special examination period and the student still failed to take the exams, he/she would be given a grade of 40.
 Mobile phones shall be turned off or set to silent or vibrate mode during class hours to avoid disruption. Accepting calls is acceptable only
during legitimate emergencies. Sending text messages during a class is also prohibited.
 Food and beverages are not allowed during class hours. Those must be consumed in designated areas only.
 Too much talking and other disruptive behaviors are not permitted while classes are in session.
