PREFACE

The development of any country depends on its rate of industrial growth.

Currently, there is a worldwide race in industrial projects. The develop-
ment of the industry depends on the development of energy reserves by
investing in petroleum projects with new developments in oil and gas on
petroleum projects. At the same time, there should be parallel projects to
deliver electricity from electrical power or nuclear plants.
In this book, the industrial structure terms refer to all the reinforced
concrete and steel structures from a small factory to a nuclear plant. This
book will be an overview of the management of project engineering, pre-
senting design calculations with examples of construction, and providing
ways of structure assessment and a maintenance plan. In addition, most
industrial projects are huge, with billions of dollars spent on a single proj-
ect; so the client, engineering firm, and contractor will be in the same
boat until they finally succeed in the project through a strong manage-
ment system. Therefore, this book examines each of the items related to
all three of these partners.
On the other hand, in these types of projects, all the engineering
discipline are working together, but unfortunately the structure or civil
engineer is usually the last one who obtain the accurate data from the
other disciplines, and the civil work is the first activity start on site, so
there will be a challenge to the structure engineers in these type of
projects to work fast and accurately.
This book focuses on the structural engineering on all of these
projects. The aim of this book is to provide the current methodologies
and guidelines to design, construct, and maintain reinforced concrete and
steel structures in industrial projects.
This book is intended to serve as a guidebook to junior and senior
engineers working in the design, construction, repair, and maintenance of
reinforced concrete and steel structures, and to assist them in all the stages
for an industrial projects.
The other challenge that faces the structure engineer is that most of
the undergraduate courses he studied in university were focused on real
estate projects and housing. However, the characteristics of industrial
projects are different, so this book provides a guide for the project,
engineering, and construction managers to lead the project to success by

achieving the owner requirements, which match with current industrial

technical practice. Therefore, this book covers the topics related to design
calculations for industry such as blast resistant buildings, foundations
under vibrating equipment, and foundations under most of the facilities
in oil and gas plants.
From a technical point of view, this book describes from the first prin-
cipal the codes and standards that are most used in industrial projects with
the industrial practice and the most applicable method in designing the
steel and reinforced concrete structures which serve the static equipment,
tanks, tower, and vibrating equipment.
The soil investigation is very essential in the industrial projects, and so
this book provides the main key to selecting the reasonable type of test,
the way to prepare the scope of work for geotechnical activities and
define the required number and depth of bore holes based on oil and gas
industrial technical practices, and the main features for designing the pile
foundation.
This book provides a practical guide to designing reinforced concrete
and steel structures and foundations in industrial projects. The mainte-
nance plan and assessment of the existing structure are vital to maintain-
ing safe operations, so Chapter 9, Assessment for Structures in Industrial
Plants, discusses the up-to-date methodology to obtain a maintenance
plan through a whole integrity management system.
