Course Description: This course is a rational and comprehensive study covering the fundamental concepts and principles of general
chemistry and correlating those concepts in the study of organic chemistry. In inorganic chemistry, emphasis is given to
atomic, ionic and molecular structures and their correlations with their physical and chemical properties.
On the other hand, organic chemistry deals with the occurrence, type, formula, nomenclature, structures and
structural effects of the different classes of organic compounds as the main concern of the study.
Laboratory work is an integral part of the course. This involves the performance of exercises and experiments which
will acquaint the students with some of the fundamental chemical laboratory operations as the concepts and principles
are illustrated.
Pre-requisite: None

Course Outcomes: At the end of the course the students are expected to:

1. Cognitive
1.1 Manifest understanding of the basic concepts and principles of inorganic and organic chemistry;
1.2 Identify and classify the inorganic and organic chemistry materials and realize their importance to human
life;

2. Affective
2.1 Demonstrate science-based skills and techniques in performing laboratory experiments, record and
interpret results accurately and correctly;
2.2 Develop appreciation and interest in the course and be aware of the practical applications and social
implications of the knowledge gained.
2.3 Show confidence in the use of the sound knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of inorganic
and organic chemistry as foundation of higher chemistry courses;
2.4 Find and appreciate the practical applications and social implications of the chemistry knowledge gained;

3. Psychomotor
3.1 Practice rational thinking and manifest self-respect, self-discipline, independence, honesty, and
responsibility not only in further studies but also in any situation in life.
3.2 Apply/Use the knowledge, skills and attitudes developed during the course in coping with the different
situations in life, particularly as students and generally, as members of the family and the bigger
community.
