Phased Array Practical Exam


Purpose: Following the given information below, the technician is to demonstrate
their ability to set up a probe configuration, calibrate, input scanning parameters,
examine a weld specimen and report the findings.

Probe Configuration

Sectoral Scan
- 45º-70º
- Utilize as many channels as unit allows
- .5º Resolution

Linear Scan
- 60º
- 8 elements per beam, create as many beams as possible

Calibration

Using a side drilled hole calibrate sensitivity, wedge delay and a 2 point TCG for the Sectoral Scan
only.

Calibrate encoder

Scanning Parameters (Weld is to be examined with Sectoral Scan only)

- Set up all relevant position parameters and measurements for examining a weld (assume
dual probe set up)
- 1mm scan resolution
- A, S, C views

Save setup on Jump Drive as your name/probe/wedge

Create an encoded scan of the entire length of the weld coupon.


Report

Create a report containing:

- All probe and setup parameters


- Defect image with proper cursor and gate locations
- Defect measurements (%Amplitude, Height, Depth, Scan start location, Length, Axial
distance to centerline,
- User fields containing Contractor, Technician, Customer, Project and Part Number
- Defect interpretation in a comment

Report is to be saved as name/plate number and printed for review
