Introduction
Reading Arabic without vowels
‘Tashkeel’ or ‘Harakat’ seems hard
for most of the Arabic learners who
have just started or have a bit of
time learning this beautiful
language.

However,I tried to make a summary of

the main useful tips which could
help you boost your confidence as
learners and go further in your
learning path.
Tip 1

To know how to read without vowels, you should already know
how to read words with vowels and know about all types of the
Arabic language movements; ْ‫اﻟﺤَﺮَﻛَﺎت‬

There are many movements but the most essential are the
followings:
1. Short vowels:‫اﻟﺤَﺮَﻛَﺎتُ َاْﻟﻘَﺼِﻴﺮَة‬
2. Tanween: ‫اﻟﺘﻨْﻮِﻳﻦ‬
3. Sukun: ‫اﻟﺴﻜُﻮن‬
4. Long vowels:‫اﻟْﺤَﺮَﻛَﺎتُ اﻟﻄﻮِﻳﻠَﺔ‬
5. Shaddah and Madd:‫ﺷَﺪ وَ ﻣَﺪ‬

Most people struggle effectively to increase their vocabulary
but this is one of the main job you should do to reach reading
without vowels.

● Try to memorise as much vocabulary as you can in the

context of your need for the language.

● Repeat the word out loud in order to listen how to

pronounce it and also to be familiar with it, that will help you
to recognise the word when you come across it in any other
kind of texts.
● Understand the context of the word in different context: because you
could meet many words with the same letters but with different meanings.

Like in the following example:

The word/ verb Meaning in English In the text

To lie/ He lied
َ‫ﻛَذَ ب‬ ‫ﻛذب‬
Make someone wrong
َ‫َﻛذﱠب‬ ‫ﻛذب‬
A lie
ٌ‫َﻛذِب‬ ‫ﻛذب‬

Grammar will make it easier for you if you know:
● How to use the ‘’articles’’
● How to use adjectives
● How to use prepositions
● The Pronouns list
● How to conjugate verbs
● How to use feminine and plural
● How names are translated in Arabic
And so many other rules.
With the basic knowledge of grammar in the course of time,
You will be able to guess some vowels at the end of the word and sometimes
at the beginning and in the middle of the word as well.

Grammar helps you to play with the words you already memorized with
and without vowels.
Tip 4
Re d I ab
Reading books or any kind of writing could help you a lot.
Make the habit of reading, like when you read in your own
language. The more you read the more you meet many
repetitive vocabulary which are the basic of the language.
Read first with vowels then challenge yourself to read the
same thing without vowels.
● Read children’s books

Children’s books are the easiest writing you can read, they have the
easiest vocabulary and the simplest grammar.
So, try to start with them then go and read other difficult texts.
● Read out loud: If you read out loud, you will use your four parts
of your body (brain, eyes, ears and voice) this will help you to
develop your ability to remember and communicate with the
language.
● Read what interests you: try to read something in the target
language that interests you. For example, if you like gardening,
read about gardening.
● Read observantly: When you read, notice how the sentences are
put together, the order of the words...etc. Try to remember
these things and put them in practice when you read in any
situations without vowels.
Tip 5

If you record yourself reading with vowels
your mind will record the words too.
So, listen to your recording once or more times,
then read the text with your eyes, you will be able to
make a combination between the sound and the word
with vowels and without vowels too.

If you prefer to listen to a story instead of reading, try to make the relation
between the recording and the script to learn how the word is written
without vowels.
