 GETTING AROUND THE CITY
TRAFFIC INFORMATION
For up-to-date information about events, roadworks and
other factors that may affect traffic and travel routes,
see trafikgoteborg.se and trafiken.nu.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Västtrafik runs local trams, buses, archipelago ferries
and commuter trains. Whichever ticket or public
transport pass you use in Gothenburg it always covers
travel by tram, bus and ferry. You can buy tickets from
Västtrafik sales outlets or using the Västtrafik To-Go
app. (You will need a Swedish mobile subscription.) The
Tourist Centre at Kungsportsplatsen sells 1-day and
3-day passes that are valid in Gothenburg.
On trams, you can buy tickets from the vending machine.
You will need a debit card. On city buses, you cannot buy
tickets on board. So you need to buy a ticket in advance.
On archipelago ferries, river boats and commuter trains
you can pay on board. Note, payment by credit card only,
not cash.

CONGESTION TAX
Gothenburg imposes a congestion tax on vehicles
registered in Sweden and abroad. The congestion tax
applies when you drive in/out or through Gothenburg
from Monday to Friday between 06:00 and 18:29. It does
not apply on Saturdays, public holidays, the day before
a public holiday and throughout July. No congestion
charge applies on these days.The congestion tax is
charged automatically by invoice.

CASH IS NOT KING
Sweden is widely regarded as the most cashless society
on the planet, according to Visit Sweden. Most of the
country’s bank branches have stopped handling cash
and most shops, museums and restaurants now only
accept plastic or mobile payments.

Explore Gothenburg by bike using Styr & Ställ city bikes!
A 3-day pass costs SEK 25 and you can pay by credit card
at one of the bike stations. When you use a bike the first
30 minutes are always free. The second half hour costs
SEK 10 and the third half hour SEK 20. The fourth half
hour and further half hours cost SEK 40 per half hour or Book your trip at
part of a half hour. In addition to SEK 25 you pay a deposit

From the endless nights of midsummer to the magical winter light of Christmas.
Sweden offers four distinct seasons, each with its own special charm.

SPRING
The warmth of summer returns and city dwellers flock
back to the terrace cafés and bars in Haga and the
inner city. Another clear sign of spring is the reappear-
ance of the green rabbits at Liseberg amusement park
from the end of April. The blossoming of the cherry
trees at Järntorget and the flowering bulbs at Gothen-
burg Botanical Garden are also well worth seeing.
SUMMER
It is easy to fall in love with the light summer evenings
in Gothenburg and sunny days in the archipelago spent
swimming and sunbathing. Summer also brings lots of
events, and music lovers make sure to visit Gothenburg
during the Way Out West festival in August.

AUTUMN
Gothenburg Autumn City is beautiful in the colours of
autumn. Come along and experience Halloween at Lise-
berg, cosy cafés, great shopping and an exciting range
of restaurants offering world-class fish and seafood.
WINTER
Gothenburg is a wonderful place to be in winter. Enjoy
mulled wine and gingerbread in the Haga district, pull on
a pair of skates and take a swing around Heden, or take
along a sledge, coffee and snack to Slottsskogen city
park, where you can say hello to the moose and other
animals any time of the year.

Almost everything is within walking distance of the city centre, which makes it easy to explore Gothenburg

THE MARKET HALL (SALUHALLEN).

Breathe in the aromas, sample the delicacies
or tuck into an affordable lunch. The Market Hall has
retained its old charm since 1888 and is a must for
foodies.
GÖTAPLATSEN. Do like the sea god Poseidon

and take in the view from the top of Avenyn, the
main boulevard. Arranged in a circle around you have
Gothenburg Concert Hall, Gothenburg City Theatre,
Gothenburg Museum of Art and the Hasselblad
Center.
TIME TO SPARE? TAKE A DETOUR.
On foot from Götaplatsen Korsvägen.
With Liseberg amusement park, the Universeum
Science Centre, the Museum of World Culture and the
Swedish Exhibition & Congress Centre just a short
walk away, there’s always something going on.
HAGA NYGATA. Stroll down this cosy pedes-

trian street and take a break for coffee among
the charming “Governor’s houses” dating from the
late 19th century. You might even be tempted to try
Gothenburg’s biggest cinnamon bun!
SKANSEN KRONAN. The fortress was

brought into service in 1698 and equipped with
23 cannons, but was never used in battle. Today the
hill is a popular lookout point offering inviting views
over the rooftops.
TIME TO SPARE? TAKE A DETOUR.
Take tram number 3/11 from Järntorget
Mariaplan. Enjoy the laid-back charm of the
neighbourhood with its small shops, cafés and
restaurants.
FESKEKÔRKA FISH MARKET HALL. This

fish market that looks like a church is a sign of
the almost religious passion with which locals regard
seafood. The building was completed in 1874 to a
design by the city architect, Viktor von Gegerfeldt.
MAGASINSGATAN. Rest your feet and watch

the world go by with a coffee or a bite to eat from a
food truck. The city’s trendiest district also offers
great shopping.
7 KRONHUSET. Take a stroll to the oldest
building in Gothenburg, dating from 1654.
Sense the wing beats of history and take a look in the
artisan studios that ring the cobbled courtyard.
THE GÖTEBORG OPERA (GÖTEBORGS-

OPERAN). The architectural design was
inspired by the harbour landscape of silhouetted
ships, sails, bridges and cranes. An internationally
renowned arena for dance, opera, musicals and
concerts.
TIME TO SPARE? TAKE A DETOUR.
Take the Älvsnabben harbour ferry from Lilla
Bommen Eriksberg. See the river Göta Älv from
the top deck and leave the ferry in the former shipyard
area of Eriksberg, where you can see the Swedish
Ship Götheborg, the landmark gantry crane and enjoy
the view towards Älvsborgsbron bridge.

“EXPLORE THE ARCHIPELAGO”
The islands dotted along the coast are close enough to
visit for the day and have a totally different tempo to the
city. The distances between the islands are short, so they
are perfect for island hopping. Several of the islands
have accommodation and restaurants.
The southern islands are car-free and you can easily
reach them all year round from Stenpiren in central
Gothenburg or from the ferry terminal at Saltholmen.
You can get to Saltholmen by bike, bus or tram from
central Gothenburg. From there, ferries depart about
once an hour, or a little more often in summer. The same
ticket is valid for travel by bus, tram and boat.
You can reach the northern islands from Lilla Varholmen
ferry terminal, following highway 155 towards Hisingen/
Öckerö by car, bus or bike. Two ferries depart from Lilla
Varholmen, towards Hönö/Öckerö or Björkö, and both are
free of charge. In summer, a ferry runs direct from Sten-
piren and Eriksberg in central Gothenburg to Hönö Klåva.
You need to buy a special ticket on board for this ferry.
