1. What body function might a respiratory therapist strive to
improve? What structures are involved?
-A respiratory therapist would strive to improve the gas exchange of CO(Carbon Dioxide) and
O(Oxygen). The structure involved are the nose, mouth, throat, larynx, pharynx, trachea, lungs, alveoli,
bronchial tubes, and the heart (only to some extent)

2. Give your own example of how the structure of a part of the

body is related to its function.
-The walls of the air sacs in the lungs are very thin, permitting rapid movement of inhaled oxygen into
the blood.

3. Define the following terms: atom, molecule, cell, tissue, organ,

system, and organism.
A. Atom- the smallest units of matter that participate in chemical reactions.
B. Molecule- two or more atoms joined together.
C. Cell- Molecules combine to form cells, the basic structural and functional units of an organism that
are composed of chemicals.
D. Tissues- are groups of cells and the materials surrounding them that work together to perform a
particular function.
E. Organs are structures that are composed of two or more different types of tissues; they have specific
functions and usually have recognizable shapes.
F. Organ system- consists of related organs with a common function.
G. Organism- All the parts of the human body functioning together.

4. At what levels of organization would an exercise physiologist

study the human body? (Hint: Refer to Table 1.1.)
-An exercise physiologist is concerned with the changes to cell and organ functions as a result of
muscular activity.

5. Referring to Table 1.2, which body systems help eliminate wastes?

-DIGESTIVE SYSTEM & URINARY SYSTEM

6. List the six most important life processes in the human body.
-Metabolism,responsiveness,movement,growth,differentiation,and reproduction.
