Implementation of Blended-learning and Project-based Learning in All Science Classes

The goal of this innovation proposal and plan is to create a more inquiry based learning
environment in my classroom then eventually the science department at my school. By decreasing class
time spend on notes and worksheets and increasing lab investigations and inquiry, students will be more
successful. In my proposal I laid out some of the steps of implementation, but a full implementation
plan is needed. Since I am piloting this program I will choose a flipped classroom model to start my
blended learning process. I will use the learning management system (LMS); canvas, to deliver content
in the form of notes, videos, discussions and other resources. By completing some of these things
outside the classroom students will have more time for investigation. Class time will be used to work on
lab investigations with some project based learning. As I follow this plan I will be planning with my
PLC and instructional coach to make sure best teaching practices are being met.
As a classroom teacher I would like to start a school year with this plan and carry throughout the
year. But I also want to be proficient in planning and implementing the system before I can start the
year and follow this plan all year. Looking at other systems rollouts, I think that it will take at least one
year of piloting before I will be able to show my results to administration. Ideally after I have piloted
the system it will take another year for my department to gradually implement this system. I’ll start in
fall of 2020 and slowly start the flipped model with project based learning and adjust as needed. The
following plan is very preliminary and will change.

Fall 2020
 August
o School starts, introduce students to the classroom and procedures.
o Introduce canvas (LMS that my district requires we use) to students and parents.
 September
o Look over the units plans with PLC and decide which units will be good for
implementing a blended learning environment and project based learning in the fall
semester.
o Select at least 2 units to flip in the first semester.
o Discuss the unit plans chosen with instructional coach.
 October
o Plan the first flipped unit with PLC and instructional coach.
o Introduce blended learning and project based learning to the students and parents.
o Flip a lesson or two to familiarize students with the model before the whole unit is
flipped.
 November
o Teach the first flipped unit, document issues or things that need to be changed for the
next unit.
o Class time will be spent on inquiry, investigations and hands-on activities.
o Continue planning with PLC to prepare for the next flipped unit.
 December
o Teach the next flipped unit, document issues or things that need to be changed for the
next unit.
o Class time will be spent on inquiry, investigations and hands-on activities.
o Plan for exams and next semester with PLC.
Spring 2021
 January
o Plan with PLC and select at least 2 units to flip in the second semester.
o Reintegrate students to school and procedures.
o Continue canvas integration.
 February
o Teach the next flipped unit, document issues or things that need to be changed for the
next unit.
o Class time will be spent on inquiry, investigations and hands-on activities.
o Continue planning with PLC to prepare for the next flipped unit.
 March
o Teach the next flipped unit, document issues or things that need to be changed for the
next unit.
o Class time will be spent on inquiry, investigations and hands-on activities.
o Continue planning with PLC to prepare for the next flipped unit.
 April
o Prepare for STAAR testing using canvas and in class reviews.
o STAAR test.
o Continue planning with PLC to prepare for the next flipped unit.
 May
o Teach the next flipped unit, document issues or things that need to be changed for the
next unit.
o Class time will be spent on inquiry, investigations and hands-on activities.
o End the year with a reflection on the units that were flipped, decide what can be
improved or changed.
Summer 2021
 June- July
o Show my flipped classroom model and results to colleagues for review and
improvements.
o Plan the remaining units in the fall semester to flip.
Fall 2021
 August- December
o School starts, introduce students to the classroom and procedures.
o Introduce canvas, blended learning and project based learning to the students and parents.
o Plan with PLC to revamp the previously flipped units and continue planning for the new
units.
Spring 2022
 January-May
o Reintegrate students to school and procedures.
o Plan with PLC to revamp the previously flipped units and continue planning for the new
units.
o Prepare for STAAR testing using canvas and in class reviews.
o STAAR test.
Summer 2022
 June- July
o Show my flipped classroom model and results to colleagues for review and
improvements.
o Show results to administration and recommend the plan to the department.
Fall 2022
 August
o Start the year with a completely flipped classroom. YAY!

Following this plan, a completely flipped classroom is obtainable in the 2022-2023 school year.
Hopefully by the completion of my pilot class the rest of my department can implement this plan in their
own classroom. Changes to the plan will occur in the future and my push the complete implementation
sooner or later depending on the obstacles and challenges.
