This week your child is using different strategies
to add three-digit numbers.
For example, one way to use place value to find the sum of 153 1 260 is
shown below.
You can add the ones first, then add the tens, and then add the hundreds, writing
each sum on a line by itself. Then you add the three partial sums to get the total.

Another way to solve this problem using place value is to use the standard addition
algorithm. This involves regrouping when the digits in one of the place-value
columns add up to 10 or more. Here is how the same addition problem would look
when solved using the algorithm.

ACTIVITY Add Three-Digit Numbers
Do this activity with your child to add three-digit numbers.
Play this adding game with your child to practice adding three-digit numbers.
The goal of this game is to get a sum greater than 500 by adding a three-digit
number to 250.
• Ask your child to form a three-digit number from the number cubes. (If the
rolls are 2, 6, and 1, the possible numbers are 126, 162, 216, 261, 612, and
621.) Write down the chosen number.
• Your child adds 250 to the number, using any addition strategy.
• If the sum is greater than 500, then he or she wins the round. If not, you win
the round.
• Does it matter which number I form out of the three number cubes?
How will it change the sum?
