AGENCIES AND THE BUILDING MATERIALS
MANUFACTURED BY THEM

 Building Materials And Technology Promotion Council

The Council is structured to undertake the task of the extension and

application of technologies and materials developed by research
institutions on the ground with the backing of financial institutions and
enabling regulatory environment.

From 1990, BMTPC has been working towards operationalizing a

comprehensive and integrated approach for promotion of cost-
effective, environment-friendly & energy-efficient innovative building
materials and construction technologies for housing in urban and rural
areas including disaster resistant practices.

In this process, the Council has been instrumental in

introduction of a number of building materials and technologies
based on agro-industrial wastes such as fly ash-based
bricks/blocks, cellular light weight concrete, bamboo-based
materials, bagasse boards etc.

Partial pre-fabrication is another area which is being

propagated by the Council. Using prefabricated components,
several houses in different States have been constructed for
demonstration purposes.

For field application of cost effective technology, the Council

constructed demonstration houses in several places like Dehradun,
Bilaspur, Trichy, Nagpur, Kudalu, Bangalore under erstwhile VAMBAY
Scheme of Government of India.
 CSIR-Central Building Research Institute

CSIR-CBRI to work as the world-class knowledge base for providing solutions to

almost all area of Building construction / Habitat planning and construction
including building materials, technology, fire engineering and disaster mitigation.

Bricks and Tiles

 Researches carried out at C.B.R.I. have shown that suitable sand-lime
bricks could be produced from the desert sand of Rajasthan.
 Results of research could bring benefit to the tile industry also. Cracking
and warping of green tiles
during drying is one of the major problems facing the tile industry in India.
A process developed at the Institute, which consists in mixing raw clay with a
small amount of ammonium chloride, has been found to be effective in reducing
the losses to a considerable extent.

Lightweight concrete
The Institute has successfully produced lightweight aggregates from industrial
wastes like fly ash, blast furnace slag, silt deposit of water works and certain
suitable natural clay deposits. These can be used for in situ construction, making
masonry blocks and precast structural members. Extensive surveys have been
conducted for the location of suitable clay deposits from which lightweight
bloated clay aggregate could be produced.

Gypsum-based building materials

One of the ways of effecting economy in the use of Cement in building is to use
low grade gypsum for making plaster, plaster boards and building blocks at
such places where gypsum is available in large quantities at low cost. C.B.R.I.
has used Bikaner gypsum of 70 to 75 per cent purity in investigations for
developing plaster boards, hollow blocks and foamed blocks for partition walls.
 Building materials facility for CEBs and community training
center in Jinja, Uganda

The National Slum Dwellers Federation of Uganda (NSDFU) and the NGO Altogether,
both working for and with the urban poor in Uganda, support a key project in the city of
Jinja, concerning sustainable housing and the production of building materials. Both
organizations jointly facilitate local initiatives to improve the daily living conditions of the
poor in Jinja, in particular through the establishment of community savings groups.

The facility in Jinja produces sustainable building materials with which homes can be
built or improved by means of self-help. The facility sells the building materials directly
to the households, which may obtain technical assistance for the proper and
professional use of the materials in self-help construction.
 National Urban Housing Mission (NUHM), 2015
The salient features of the NUHM are:

1) Provides the flexibility to the States to choose the option, which can best meet the
demand of housing in their states and also empowers them to formulate and approve
projects for faster implementation of the projects.

2) Promotes the adoption of modern, innovative and green technologies and building
material for faster and quality construction of houses, which would be selected based on
discussions with regulatory and administrative bodies.

3) Provide technical and financial support in accordance with the guidelines to the states
to meet the challenge of urban housing.
