SHANGHAI TOWER

Location : shanghai,china.
Year:2014
Height:632 m
Floors:121
Architect: Gensler
Aspect ratio:7
Earthquake zone:
design
• The design has 2 statergies
1.asymetrical form of tower.
2.it’s triangular profile and rounded corners.

• The wind tunnel test is used to find the most beneficial scaling factor of about 55% and
rotation at 120°, which is account for the 24% savings of the wind load working on the
structure.
• typhoon-force winds that are common to the region, the architects designed an asymmetric
form with a tapered profile and rounded corners — a form that reduced wind loads by 24%
and saved $58 million USD in materials.
Structural design
The Shanghai Tower lateral system :
“Core-Outriggers-Mega Frame”
Inner Cylindrical Tower
• Concrete Composite Core
• Exterior Mega Frame
• Outrigger Trusses : Super
Columns and Double Belt
Trusses
• The core acts in concert with an outrigger
and super column system. There are four
paired super columns -two at each end of
each orthonormal axis.

Lateral force resisting system

• Steel I-sections are embedded in
concrete, that supports the outrigger
trusses.
• The double belt truss supported
through main 8 columns support the
curtain walls.
• The main 8 columns reduces in size as
the building grows in height, to
complement the reducing volume of
building.
Shanghai Tower piled raft:
The tower has a 5-storey basement, and its foundation depth is 31.4 [m]. The thickness of
the raft under the tower is 6 [m] and the area of the raft is 8945 [m2]. The raft
of Shanghai tower is supported by 955 bored piles with a diameter 1.0 [m].
