Technology

The word technology comes from Greek

τεχνολογία (technología) :
τέχνη (téchnē) - meaning "art, skill, craft"
λογία (-logía) - meaning "study of-"

The term can either be applied generally or to specific

areas.
Examples:
construction technology
medical technology
information technology.

Science

 Latin Scientia = knowledge, knowing

 Science is concerned with understanding
how nature and the physical world work.
 The effort to discover and increase this
understanding
 Good science depends on observation and
experiment (descripting and experimental
research)
 Scientists observe things, try to explain their
observations, and then conduct experiments
to test their ideas => the scientific method

Engineering
… has a long history

• since ancient times as humans

devised fundamental inventions
such as the pulley, lever, and
wheel,
• exploiting basic mechanical
principles to develop useful tools
and objects.
• Each of these inventions is
consistent with the modern
definition of engineering.

Engineering and Science

 There is an overlap between the sciences and
engineering. Both need accurate observation of materials
and phenomena and use mathematics.

 Engineers apply science. Sometimes they also have to

explore new phenomena for developing technology, thus
becoming, for the moment, scientists.

 Scientists may also have to complete engineering tasks,

such as designing experimental apparatus or building
prototypes.

Engineering and Science

 Engineering research is different from scientific research.

 When the problems are too complex for an exact

solution, approximations and empirical methods are
used, e.g. the use of Miner's rule to calculate fatigue
damage

 Engineers stress invention, and have to consider

economic, safety, environmental and legal restrictions.

 Scientists study the world as it is; engineers create the

world that has never been. (Theodore von Kármán)

Main Branches of Engineering

Mechanical engineering – The design of physical or mechanical systems,
such as power and energy systems, pumps and compressors, transportation
vehicles etc.

Electrical engineering – The design and study of various electrical and

electronic systems, including computer, communication and control systems

Chemical engineering – The application of physics, chemistry, biology, and

engineering principles in order to carry out chemical processes.

Civil engineering – The design and construction of public and private works,
such as buildings, transport infrastructure, water supply and treatment,
bridges, dams etc.

Modern fields such as Marine Engineering often integrate various basic

disciplines, they are interdisciplinary.

The Engineer
 One who practices engineering is called an engineer – An
Engineer is a professional practitioner of engineering, who
applies scientific knowledge and ingenuity for solving
technical problems.
 The word engineer is derived from the Latin roots ingeniare
("to invent") and ingenium ("cleverness").
 Engineers are grounded in applied sciences. The work of
engineers forms the link between scientific discoveries and
their subsequent applications to human needs.
 Those licensed to do so may have formal designations such
as Professional Engineer, Chartered Engineer, Incorporated
Engineer, Ingenieur or European Engineer.

Problem Solving
 Engineers solve problems.
 Problem solving requires generating new knowledge,
 by searching and deducting from science,

 by conducting experiments.

 Generate and evaluate possible solutions, choose the

solution that best meets the requirements.
 Computers are increasingly used for modeling the problem
and finding the solution by simulation, e.g.
 CAD Computer-Aided Design

 CAM Computer-Aided Manufacturing

 Evaluating the performance of ship and main engine
 Planning maintenance and repair for ship and machinery
 Managing bunker and spare parts supply
 Ensuring compliance with rules and regulations
 Advising in trouble-shooting of operational problems
 Surveying marine technology
 Improving ship construction and ship machinery

Engineering Ethics – The Social Context

 Engineering is a very powerful tool to make changes to
environment, society and economies. Its application brings
with it a great responsibility.
 Engineering projects can be subject to controversy,
examples are the development of nuclear weapons, the
gene manipulation, or the extraction of oil.
 Engineers have obligations to the (world-wide) society, to
their clients, their employers and to their profession.
 Many engineering societies have established codes of
practice and codes of ethics to guide members and inform
the public. Some engineering companies have enacted
serious corporate and social responsibility policies.

Technical System

 Consists of components (elements or subsystems)

 Component have functions within the system

 There are interactions between the components: exchange of

matter, energy and/or information

 The system fulfils its function by the component‘s functions +

by the interactions between the components.

ship machinery systems, for example:
Ship machinery system System function

Propulsion system Move the ship forward

Steering system Control the course of the ship

Power generation system Provide electrical power

Cargo handling system Support loading and unloading

Safety system Prevent damage to ship and crew
