VERB

It can express or show action. All sentences contain verbs.

Verb shows actions and link ideas.


Linking Verbs – State of being verbs.
Action – The bear eats fish – The bear looked at me – The bear
smells a person.
State of being – The beaer is hungry – The bear looked lonely –
The bear smells like cinnamon!

Helping Verbs – Auxiliary


Brian is eating a pizza.
Brian has eaten a pizza.
Brian was eating a pizza.
Brian had been eating a pizza.
The Irregular Verb
Verb Aspect
Perfect Aspect-Every action is complete. – I have washed the
dishes (Complete action). – I had washed the dishes. – I will
have washed the dishes.
Perfect progressive aspect – doing something for a long time – I
had been eating cookies – I have been eating cookies – I will
have been eating cookies.
The Modal Verbs
Expresses conditions on stuff - likelihood/certainty, ability,
permission, obligation, requirement, need.
May – might – must – can – could – shall – should – will –
would.
He must have gon that way – Likelihood
You must be this tall to ride the doom-coastter (obligation)
You must remove your shoes (obligation)
It may rain (possibility) – You may enter (permission) – I can
eat ten pounds of broccoli (ability) – I would make the bed, but I
am tired (possibility exists)
You shouldn’t do that (advice ) He will win the competition
(future)
