MIDTERM REPORT

GROUP D

MEEN 3145 – MATERIAL SCIENCE LABORATORY – SPRING 2020

INSTRUCTOR: Mohammad Motaher Hossain
STUDENT: Diem Hoang Nguyen
K-NUMBER: K00442734
DATE: 03/06/2020
1. Compression test

- Standard Test Methods of Compression Testing of Metallic Material at Room

Temperature – ASTM E9

- Sample dimension: diameter of the specimen should be between 12.7 mm (0.5 in) to
31.75 mm (1.25 in). Height range from 25.4 mm (1 in) to more than 152.4 mm (6 in).

- Testing procedure:

o Prepare the specimen, measure and record the width and thickness or diameter
of the specimen.

o Place the specimen in the test fixture and center it in the middle. If required,
attach the deflectometer to the gauge section

o Apply the load at a constant speed rate of 0.005in/in/min or at a rate equivalent

to 0.005 in/in/min strain-rate in the elastic portion.

o For ductile materials, continue until the yield strength or yield point, the
strength at a strain can be determined. For brittle materials, continue the test
until failure.

- The data obtained from a compression test may include: yield strength, the upper yield
strength, the Young’s modulus, the stress-strain curve and the compressive strength.

2. Tensile test

- Standard Test Methods for Tension Testing of Metallic Materials (ASTM-E8)

- Sample dimensions: Gage length up to 8 in, total length can be up to 18 in and diameter
of the specimen can take up to 1 ½ in.

- Testing procedure:

o Measure and record the specimen dimensions necessary to determine the cross
sectional area at its smallest point.

o Mark the length of the specimen.

o Install the specimen to the testing machine and start loading.

o Run the test until specimen failure or fracture. Remove the broken specimen
from the machine and fit the fractured ends together. Measure the distance
between the gage marks to the nearest 0.05 mm.

- The data obtained from a tensile test may include: yield strength, yield point elongation,
tensile strength and reduction of area.
