The principal of the school should be able to support the school’s vision, exemplify appropriate

dispositions, and promote positive school culture, not just by themselves, but by identifying leadership

responsibilities and finding the right people to fill these positions. A principal can determine who is

ready to fill said leadership positions by not only asking who would be interested, but being able to get

to know your staff and interview people who are passionate and can relate and support the school’s

vision. My current principal said she has been blessed to have a staff willing to take on her leadership

positions she has needed and the ones she created, but the times she has had to interview, she asks

them the questions that directly apply to the tasks at hand.

Assigning the leadership responsibilities thoughtfully is important because without a cohesive

and caring group of people to help lead the school the culture will be divided, and the main vision of the

school will shift. The learning of the students needs to be the main priority and if a leader does not seem

to take that as their number one priority as well, then maybe they are not the right fit for the school. For

example, when it comes to either the reading or math coach if the person is not familiar with teaching

the curriculum that the school uses, then there may be a disconnect when it comes to help the teachers

with learning and utilizing the materials. My school used both the i-Ready online program and the

supplemental reading curriculum, so our reading coach was very well versed with the ins and outs of the

resources and was able to create and present wonderful professional development opportunities for the

entire staff. Without choosing someone who is well versed or is willing to become extremely

knowledgeable with any part of the leadership team, then it would be hard to allow for the greatest

student achievement.
