Numerical example - 1
The specific gravities and weight proportions for aggregate and bitumen are as under for the
preparation of Marshall mix design. The volume and weight of one Marshall specimen was found to be 475
cc and 1100 gm. Assuming absorption of bitumen in aggregate is zero, find Vv, Vb, VMA and VFB.

Item A_1 A_2 A_3 A_4 B

Wt.(gm) 825 1200 325 150 100

Sp. Gr 2.63 2.51 2.46 2.43 1.05

Solution:

Step 1:

To find out theoretical specific gravity: As we know that

Step 2:

To find out Bulk/Actual specific gravity:

Step 3:

To find out Percentage Air Void:

Step 4:

To find out percent bitumen content:

Step 4:

To find out Volume of voids in aggregates:

Step 4:

To find out Voids filled with bitumen:

Numerical example – 2

The results of Marshall test for five specimen is given below. Find the optimum bitumen
content of the mix.

Solution:

I have plotted the graph in my Excel sheet and Have found the bitumen content
Graph 1:
1st Graph is between stability and percent bitumen content.
By examining The graph the maximum value is on 5 % Bitumen Content That is 812.7.
Graph 2:
2nd Graph is between stability and maximum bulk specific gravity (Gm).
By examining The graph the maximum value is on 5 % Bitumen Content that is 2.26.
Graph 3:
3rd Graph is between stability and the median of designed limits of percent air voids (Vv)
in the total mix (i.e. 4%).
By examining the graph the maximum value is on 3 % Bitumen Content that is 12.5.

Optimum Bitumen Content:

The optimum bitumen Content is the average of above:

3+5+5
Optimum Bitumen Content = = 4.333 %
