Integration of BIM & allied paraphernalia in Local Industry

Proposed research
1. Analysing new problems presented by the modern complex construction
industry due to much larger projects, increasing interdependency between
different stakeholders in construction and ever-growing constraints.

2. Study of the software, tools and techniques that were employed in construction
projects that pioneered in adopting BIM software usage in Lahore (Emporium
and Packages Malls). In depth comparison of skill level required, associated cost,
time and quality with similar projects in which conventional CAD software were
used.

3. Investigation of new possibilities in structural designs allowed by BIM

software and a deep scrutiny into the results and their accuracy. Efforts will be
made to include study of complex structural designs that were or could be
designed using BIM.

4. Comparison of BIM with other modern solutions such as Inter-organizational

information systems (IOIS), Web collaborative Extranets (WCEs) and Document
Management Systems (DMS).

5. Developing a framework that allows for efficient transition of local industry

from independent CAD platforms -that are still widely in use today- to BIM. All
facets of required paraphernalia will be discussed e.g. PM framework, hardware
and software requirements, finding common ground between local CAD and BIM
practises and interchangeable concepts. The costs and time required for this
transition will also be studied in depth.

6. Exploring potential uses of BIM in all project phases i.e.

• Understanding projects needs
• Designing phase (architectural and structural)
• Development and redesign phase
• Managing the construction and associated tasks
• Managing operations and decommissioning phases

7. A brief study of prevalence, popularity and ease of usage of all major BIM
programs currently available for professional use i.e. Revit (Autodesk),
ArchiCAD (Graphicisoft), Bently Architecture, Digital Project (Gehry
technologies).
8. Advantages of implementing BIM in extensions of existing projects and
recycling of structures by use of site logical plans for demolition and collection
in a much more controlled, productive and safer way.

9. Detailed study, analysis and interpretation of drawings and data from ongoing
construction project, a 42 storey RCC hotel building adjacent to Emporium Mall,
Lahore. Try to understand the significance of solutions offered by use of BIM and
the difficulties arising due to it on a day-to-day basis and comparing them with
conventional practices.

10. Conclusions of entire study will be presented along with recommendations

for future BIM use and research in Pakistan.
