eras ead P&B Engineering Company Ltd. With over 30 years experience in the manu- facture of: P & B Golds’ Thermal Motor Protection Relays Thermal Load & Maximum Demand Indicators now offer a comprehensive range of Static Protection Relays to cover @ whole range of protection requirements including Generation, Transformation, Distribution and other applic: tions. Some of the many types of Relays are listed below:— IDMT and Definite Time Overcurrent and Earth Fault Relays Directional Overcurrent and Earth Fault Relays Over Voltage and Under Voltage Relays Generator & Transformer Protection Relays Biased Differential Reverse Power Under Impedance (voltage restrained overcurrent) Under Reactance Negative Phase Sequence Frequency Timing & Auto Reclose Relays Station Battery & Network Monitors Relay Test Equipment Introduction The function of a protective relay is to supervise the protected object or installation during long periods and without interference from outside sources. At the same time maximum reliability of the relay is required when a fault occurs in the protected area as the fault itself can generate interference. For this reason steps must be taken to shield the electronic circuits from outside interference and this philosophy has formed the basis for the development and production of P & B static protective relays. The block schematic diagram shows the general layout of 2 P & B static protective relay and also shows the basic methods of protecting the electronic circuits from all types of outside interference which might cause malfunction of the relays. There are four main causes of interference; galvanic, inductive or capacitive coupling from outside circuits or through radio frequency electro-magnetic fields The measured quantities, voltage or current, are fed to an isolating or matching transformer 1. Its function is to separate the measuring circuit galvanically from the electronic circuits of the relay and to reduce the measured signal to a level which is suitable for electronic processing. The matching ‘transformer is also capacitively shielded. The input measuring signal from the isolating transformer is fed into a matching block 2 which usually includes load resistors, a 50 Hz filter and amplitude cutting elements. Amplitude cutting elements are used to limit the input signal amp- litude to a level just above the maximum setting value of the relay. A safe signal is then fed to the measuring circuits in Block 3. The instantaneous measuring techniques employed ensures that the resetting ratio of the relay is high and the resetting time short and independent of the ratio between the set starting value and the actual amplitude of the fault signal. Blocks 4 include an adjustable timing circuit which determines the time-lag of the relay. They also include logic circuits for operational programming of the relay either manually by plugs Block schematic diagram for P &B- Static Protective Relays ‘on the front panel or remotely through the control input relay 6, T is a combined starting and oper- ation indicator and is reset with push-button R which is also used for checking the internal supply voltage. The auxiliary supply voltage is individually fed to each protective relay through an internal DC-DC converter 5. This converter separates the DC net- work galvanically from the relay and generates a stabilised supply voltage for the electronic circuits. Electromagnetic auxiliary relays 7a and 7b are used on the output side of the relay. These give good electrical separation between the electronic circuits and the output circuits and the output contacts are of the heavy duty type suitable for direct circuit breaker tripping To protect the electronic circuits from surrounding electromagnetic fields that might induce inter- ference signals directly on to the printed circuit boerds, all protective relays are housed in sheet steel cases, which ere earthed when the relay cases are mounted. The frame-work of the plug-in unit is also sheet steel and the plug-in unit is automatically earthed when it is pushed into its case. The sheet steel cases form an effective shield against electro- magnetic interference fields and in this way the electronic circuits of the relay are given theessential conditions for trouble free and reliable operation. The design and construction of P & B static pro- tective relays ensures effective shielding from all sources of outside interference. The experience of static protective relays in operation for more than a decade and continuous development has resulted in a range of accurate, Special features : © All relays are constructed in plugin with: drawable type units. @ Four types of relay cases available; flush mounted, semi-flush mounted, surface or pro- jecting mounted and 19 in. sub-rack mounted. © Ezch protective relay forms one complete protection system, as the same plugin unit includes isolating transformers, measuring and ‘timing elements, auxiliary tripping and signalling relays, optical operation indicators and power supply unit. @ Anew type of DC- DC converter is provided in each plug-in unit enabling any auxiliary supply voltage level from 40V DC to 275V DC to be used without the need to reconnect. The relays are therefore interchangeable between installa- tions with different auxiliary DC supply voltage levels. © The electronic circuits are effectively shielded against outside interference. @ Low power dissipation of the electronic circuits ‘temperature rises to a moderate level. sensitive and reliable protective systems to cover a wide range of protection requirements. © Linearized isolating transformers in short-circuit protection relays enables very accurate measure- ments of high current levels. © Heavy duty contacts of auxiliary output relays for direct circuit breaker tripping. © Simple connection of input and output circuits by means of easily accessible terminal screws, @ Automatic short-circuiting contacts for the current transformer secondaries. on relay withdrawl. @ Mechanical interlocks to prevent interchange of different relays. © Each protective relay has wide setting ranges providing a broad scope of application. © Simple testing with testing adaptor or supplied testing equipment. @ Standardised dimensions of relay cases in accordance with DIN 43831 or IEC Publ. 297 for 19in. sub-rack mounting. A plugin relay unit and a relay unit in @ flush-mounting case. Relay units in a 19In, sub-rack, Mechanical construction of the plug-in unit All relays are withdrawable. The plug-in unit has a sheet steel framework into which the whole protective relay is mounted. The electronic com- Ponents are soldered on to one or more printed circuit boards which are hinged to give access for inspection and service. The heavy components such as matching transformers, auxiliary relays and the supply unit are mounted on a sheet steel plate. Silver plated contact plugs are mounted in an insulated moulding at the rear of the unit. The facia plate is made from grey anodised aluminium which locate the setting knobs and range selectors, operation indicators, resetting push button, measuring output sockets and locking knob. Auxiliary supply voltage A static protective relay requires a continuous auxiliary supply. Either an AC or a DC supply voltage can be used. Each relay is provided with its own individual power supply unit and with the use of a special DC — DC converter enables any supply voltage from 40V DC to 275V DC to be used without the need to reconnect. Another DC — DC converter is available for supply voltages from 17V DC to 40V DC. For an AC auxiliary supply voltage a transformer rectifier stabiliser is used. Testing For secondary injection testing of the P & B static protective relays a_ testing adaptor type PBSA 1A6 N1is available. This testing adaptor is designed for testing the full range of P & B static protective relays using any manufacturer's relay testing equipment. The adaptor can be used without relay testing equipment providing a variable AC source is available together with measuring in- struments and a synchronous timer. For both primary and secondary injection t relay test set type PBSA 260A120 N’ and is provided with variable voltage and current outputs and full instrumentation and_ timers necessary for the complete testing of P & B static protective relays. Programming and external control voltage Some overcurrent relays can be programmed which means that the same relay can then be used for a wide range of applications. The program- ming is achieved by plugs mounted on the front panel of the relay. Some relays can be blocked or deblocked by an external control voltage. The external control voltage is usually the same as the auxiliary supply voltage but can be different provided both of them lie within the voltage range specified. For instance if the standard DC-DC converter is fitted with an input voltage range of 40 to 275V DC, the control voltage and the auxiliary supply voltage must lie within this range. Relay cases The relay cases are manufactured from sheet steel with screw contact terminals located in a moulded base and a clear PVC cover hinged at the front. Automatic shorting contacts are provided for short-circuiting current measuring circuits when the relay is withdrawn from its case. Each case has a mechanical interlock to ensure that only the correct relay can be plugged into the case. The case sizes for flush mounting are standardised in accordance with DIN 43831. The same cases can be used for semi-flush mounting by the use of an additional raising frame. Surface or projecting mounting cases are supplied with an additional socket for front connection. All relays can be mounted in a 19 in. rack in accordance with IEC Publ. 297. The 19 in, rack can hold five protective relays of J3 construction or alternatively three of 43 construction and one relay of J6 construction, or 1 relay of J3 construction and 2 relays of 6 construction. Auto-reclose relays receive starting signals from protective measuring relays to give a selected reclosing cycle. Final ‘ripping is cartied out by the primary protective device directly with the circuit breaker by-passing the auto-reclose relay. If the auto-reclose relay is withdrawn from its case the primary protection is therefore not affected. Timing relays Timing relays have been developed for applica- tions where additional time-lags are required. Two independent timing circuits are provided for delayed pick-up or drop out. Both circuits are equipped with auxiliary output relays for direct circuit-breaker control. Auxiliary voltage A static protective relay requires @ continuous auxiliary supply. Either an AC or a DC supply voltage can be used, Each relay is provided with its own individual power supply unit and with the use of a special DC — DC converter enables any supply voltage from 40V DC to 275V DC to be used without the need to reconnect. Another DC — DC converter is available for supply voltages from 17V DC to 40V DC. For an AC auxiliary supply voltage a transformer rectifier stabiliser is used. Construction & mounting The auto-reclose, and separate timing relays are plugin withdrawable types having the same dimensions and mounting methods as static pro- tective relays. For this purpose a series of battery network monitors have been developed. The battery monitors for 110 and 220V DC network not only includes under voltage and earth fault supervision but are equipped with over voltage supervision. Auxiliary voltage The battery network monitors do not require a separate auxiliary voltage supply but take their auxiliary energy from the monitored DC network. Special features @ High setting accuracy fot voltage settings. © The sensitivity of the earth fault supervision is independent of the location of the fault in the DC network, @ High long-time stability of the voltage settings. © Separate contact function for each monitored level. Construction and mounting Two different types of cases are available. The battery network monitors for 24V, 48V and 60V DC networks are housed in transparent plastic cases for surface mounting. The battery network monitors for 110V and 220V DC networks are housed in plug-in withdrawable cases similar to those provided for static protective relays.
