Course Description
The Dekalb County School District mathematics program provides students with varied activities and courses
to encourage mathematical growth. Problem solving, reasoning, computation, and the application of math
skills are developed throughout the curriculum of the accelerated program. All 6th grade content and 7th grade
content (A) will be covered in this course on an accelerated schedule.

Curriculum Overview
The following academic concepts will be covered. THIS IS ONLY A GUIDE AND IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
Unit 1 – Number System Fluency: Students will continue to work with whole numbers while dividing
multi-digit numbers using the algorithm. The students will also focus on all four operations with decimals as
well as dividing fractions. Students will find common factors and multiples as they progress in their
understanding of composition and decomposition of numbers and become fluent in number sense.

Unit 2 – Rate, Ratio, and Proportional Reasoning Using Equivalent Fractions: Students will
understand ratios and rational thinking including unit rate and using rate solve real – world problems.

Unit 3 – Expressions: Students will begin the formal study of algebra. Students will learn to translate
verbal phrases into algebraic expressions, simplify expressions, and utilize exponential notation in
appropriate situations.

Unit 4 – One – Step Equations and Inequalities: Students will use their understanding of balance to
solve one-variable equations and inequalities. They will understand how to find the solution of unknowns
and make sense of real – life situations.

Unit 5 – Area and Volume: Students will extend their understanding of the meaning of area and volume
by usage of fractional edge lengths in their study of geometry. Students will find the area by composing and
decomposing figures into familiar shapes such as triangles and rectangles. In this unit, students will also
use nets of three-dimensional figures to find surface area.

Unit 6 – Statistics: Students are introduced to the study of statistics. Students begin to learn which
questions are statistical in nature. The idea that data can be collected to answer a question is introduced,
and the students learn how to describe the data by its spread, shape, and center. The students describe the
set of data and spread of data in a single number summary.

Unit 7 – Rational Explorations: Numbers and Opposites: This unit introduces students conceptually to
circumstances best described with negative values. Students explore situations appropriately represented
by negative numbers, and graph points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. Using a number line,
students learn about numbers and their “opposites”, and absolute value.

Unit 8 – Operations and Rational Numbers: In this unit, students explore and formalize rules for
operations with integers. Fractional rational numbers and whole numbers are used in computation and
exploration. Students will be able to give examples of operations, write an solve equations for real world
problems, and explain how the properties of operations apply. Real world examples include profit/loss,
money, weight, sea level, and debit/credit.

Unit 9 – Expressions and Equations: In this unit, students use the properties of operations to rewrite
equivalent numerical expressions using integers, rational, and real numbers. Students will write equivalent
expressions and equations in more than one format and use variables to represent quantities in the real
world.

Unit 10 – Ratios and Proportional Relationships: In this unit, students will develop a deeper
understanding of proportional relationships and their characteristics through graphs, tables, equations, and
diagrams.

GRADING SYSTEM: The DeKalb County School District believes that the most important assessment
of student learning shall be conducted by the teachers as they observe and evaluate students in
the context of ongoing classroom instruction. A variety of approaches, methodologies, and
resources shall be used to deliver educational services and to maximize each student’s opportunity
to succeed. Teachers shall evaluate student progress, report grades that represent the student’s
academic achievement, and communicate official academic progress to students and parents in a
timely manner through the electronic grading portal. See Board Policy IHA.

GRADING CATEGORIES *GRADE PROTOCOL

A 90 – 100 ~P
Formative and Diagnostic Assessments – 0% (pass)

Notes:
*English Learners (ELs) must not receive numerical or letter grades for the core content areas in
elementary and middle school during their first year of language development. A grade of CS or CU
must be assigned. This rule may be extended beyond the first year with approval from the EL
Studies Program. English Learners must receive a grade for ESOL courses.
~Elementary schools will utilize P (pass) and F (fail) in Health/Physical Education, Music, World
Languages, Visual Arts and Performing Arts.

DISTRICT EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS

Semester progress reports shall be issued four and a half (4½), nine,
and thirteen and a half weeks (13½) into each semester. The progress
of students shall be evaluated frequently, and plans shall be generated
STUDENT PROGRESS
to remediate deficiencies as they are discovered. Plans shall include
appropriate interventions designed to meet the needs of the students.
See Board Policy IH.
Students will not engage in an act of academic dishonesty including, but
not limited to, cheating, providing false information, falsifying school
records, forging signatures, or using an unauthorized computer user ID

or password. See the Code of Student Conduct - Student Rights
and Responsibilities and Character Development Handbook.
Homework assignments should be meaningful and should be an
application or adaptation of a classroom experience. Homework is at all
times an extension of the teaching/learning experience. It should be
HOMEWORK
considered the possession of the student and should be collected,
evaluated and returned to the students. See Board Policy IHB.

When a student is absent because of a legal reason as defined by

Georgia law or when the absence is apparently beyond the control of the
MAKE-UP WORK student, the student shall be given an opportunity to earn grade(s) for
DUE TO ABSENCES
those days absent. Make-up work must be completed within the
designated time allotted. See Board Policy IHEA.
SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS
In this classroom, students are expected to perform with high, genuine efforts
CLASSROOM
throughout the academic school year. The expectations are set to provide an

environment where students have an opportunity to grow and excel
academically without unnecessary distractions from peers. Respect for all
classmates, teachers, faculty, and staff is expected in order to create such an
environment. It is expected for students to arrive to class on time, prepared with
all materials, ready to learn, and appropriately collaborate with their peers.
Students are expected to log on to the educational platforms (such as Verge,
Google Classroom) for information pertaining to class assignments, resources,
assessments, and additional important information regarding our class.
