NATIONAL LEVEL STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION - 2020 UN-LEARNING OF SPACE
01
INTRODUCTION
UN- LEARNING OF SPACE…. Designing wellbeing through spaces

As the world enters into a new phase of change; the old learnt ways have
posed a larger question for all of us. In such trying times is it possible for us
architects to take on this new challenge through our iterations and
deliberations?

At the center of it all is our home, the collective space for us to co-habit, live
by and be alive. And yet, we still need to fulfill our ambitions, needs and
desires all through this single space.

This Competition urges architecture students to re-look at idea of dwelling and

their personality by reimagining a additional space. The type of space where
one can go to “unlearn” all the old ways and deal with the new normal as a
part of larger well-being.

DESIGN PROGRAM
The Idea is to develop a reinterpretation of unique space which can take care
of your mental and physical wellbeing especially in terms of your key interests.
Identify one key aspect of your personality and develop interpretations of the
spaces by adding various activities.

The key aspect of your personality could be decoded in unique spaces.

Opportunity of the specifically designed additional space is endless and has to
be seen as a space where one goes to unlearn from the typical apartment
concept home. Designing has to go beyond the essential spaces like Living,
sleeping, kitchen and bathrooms to bring out the unique character.

 The space has to be restricted to 25 sq.mts. of covered/indoor which could

be designed on various levels from an annexure adjoining any rooms of
your house or completely detached space on your roof top, balcony,
basement etc. showing accessibility from your home/building block.
 The space has to explore both semi indoor or complete indoor options with
play in volumes, shape, colour, materials, and quality of light all in
combination with the chosen activity.

 Encouragement in terms of using new sustainable materials, relevant
contextual thinking, architectural form experimentation and a unique
concept representation is what the challenge aspires to achieve.

GUIDELINES
For example; a meditative space in a dome attached to your house, outdoor
terrace garden with foldable furniture, huge double floor library attached to
your living room or a den in basement for all your gaming needs to have
different activities for indoor and outdoor based on your interests.

The merit of such a designed space is embedded in its unique ambience,

connection to oneself, to society, to Knowledge, to activities, to nature
which can be a central theme to your designs.
