Natural Dyes From Plants and Vegetables

MATERIALS

Cu$ng board Large bowl or measuring cup
Vegetables or plants (we used beets, spinach, tumeric and red Salt
cabbage) Condiment bo?les
Knife Funnel
Water White t-shirt or other dyeable material
Cheesecloth Rubber bands
Strainer Baking sheet with rack

STEPS

PRIOR
1. To prepare the fabric: Mix 1 cup of salt with 16 cups of water and bring to a boil (or ½ cup of salt with 8 cups of water).
2. Simmer your fabric in this soluMon for one hour prior to dyeing.
3. (If you are making a plant/veggie based dye, mix 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water and follow the same process).
4. To make the dye: Wearing gloves, chop up raw ingredients and place in a blender using a raMo of two cups of very hot (almost boiling) water to every two
cups of raw material.
5. If using a spice, such as turmeric, add one to two tablespoons of spice to every two cups of hot water.

WITH THE KIDS


6. Blend mixture unMl it becomes a very fine slurry. When done blending, strain mixture.
7. Dissolve 1 tablespoon of table salt in the liquid. Decant into condiment bo?les with a small funnel.
8. Use rubber bands to create a pa?ern on your shirt (or other co?on item such as socks, bag, onesie, etc.). Pinch, pleat or fold fabric to make design.
9. To dye fabric: Wearing gloves, squirt dyes directly onto the fabric. Once rested, rinse under cool water. Remove or cut rubber bands and hang to air dry
completely.
SHAMPOO

MATERIALS

1 cup of shampoo (160gr)


1/4 of water 62,5gr)
1/2 cup coconut milk.
5 drops of coconut/orange essenMal oil.
1 teaspoon of almond oil.
STEPS
Mix together and pour in a bo?le.

CANDLES


MATERIALS

tea lights (with container and wick)


old crayons
EssenMal oil
flowers and herbs
gli?er
STEPS
Take out wax from containers and wicks and save for later.
Melt candles and crayons and add oils, and small flowers.
With a spoon, pour on silicone moulds and add the wicks. Let it cool.
