II - DRAINAGE SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS

CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS

1. Concrete where used for drainage works shall be specified in accordance with Standard for Concrete
Work - Materials and Construction”. Cast-in-situ concrete shall be of Grade D1 “30Mpa” (cube strength
after 28 days) and pre-cast concrete shall be of 40Mpa (cube strength after 28 days) for manholes,
underground sumps, catch basins, catch boxes, pipe cradles and relieving arches etc.

2. Bedding, padding and “suitable” backfilling material of pipes shall be hard, durable, free from silt and
clay etc. and shall be in conformity with Standard for Materials and Workmanship - Site Preparation and
Earthworks”.

CONSTRUCTION
1. SETTING-OUT

Prior to commencing any work, the Contractor shall establish for setting-out the work and for
controlling the locations and levels of the drainage systems to the dimensions and levels as established
during the survey.

2. EXCAVATION

2.1 Excavation in trench shall be carried out to ensure that the drains can be laid in straight lines to the
required gradients and invert levels as established during the design

2.2 Excavation of trenches and pits shall comply with BS 6031 for safety precautions and shall also meet
the requirements as described in the relevant Standard for Materials and Workmanship - Site
Preparation and Earthworks” and “Excavation Safety Procedure”.

2.3 Sides of trenches and other excavations deeper than 1500 mm shall be suitably supported by
timbering or other means acceptable, or the trench sides shall be benched / battered back to ensure
stability of the excavation. The slope shall not be extended below a plane level with the top of the pipe.

2.4 Trench excavations for all pipes shall be taken down to the extra depths below the required
underside elevation of pipe for bedding; and then shall be backfilled with fine sandy material and
compacted to provide continuous bearing of pipe throughout the length.

2.5 The trench base shall be free of any protrusions and hard spots; and any unsuitable material shall be
removed and replaced with compacted suitable material as specified

2.6 Soft spots shall be removed from the bottom / base of trenches and then refilled to the formation
level with a suitable selected fill material and properly compacted,. Any void resulting from over
excavation below formation level shall be refilled in the same manner and re-compacted.
2.7 Proper arrangements shall be made for the rapid disposal of water entering into the excavated area
or trench when the water table is high, by pumping or bailing out to maintain the excavation free from
standing water during pipe laying and backfilling operations.

2.8 Trench excavations shall be made through all types of ground materials i.e. through suitable or
unsuitable material and / or rock. Surplus excavated material shall be removed and deposited in an
approved disposal area.

3. INSTALLATION OF PIPES

3.1 All concrete pipe cross drainage sizes are indicated on plans.

3.2 All joints must be concrete collared with a thickness of 100mm and a width of 150mm with concrete
mixture of 1:3, 1 part cement is to 3 parts of screened fined sand free from all dirt and silts.

3.3 Bedding material as specified shall be evenly spread on the prepared trench base so that the pipe
barrels could receive continuous support at the required gradient.

3.4 All pipes shall be laid true to the line and level as established during the design. Each pipe shall be
checked for correct position before laying the next pipe. All temporary supports of the pipes during
laying shall be removed prior to backfilling.

4. MANHOLES

4.1 Manholes shall be built every 10 meters and every change in direction of drainage system, and every
end of cross drainage and constructed with pre-cast reinforced concrete rings, access shafts, reducing
slabs and cover slabs or equal, or pre-cast concrete square / rectangular section, or cast-in-situ concrete
square / rectangular section. Manholes of cast-in-situ reinforced concrete construction shall have prior
approval from KOC before construction being commenced. Manholes of Cast-in-situ and / or pre-cast
reinforced concrete construction shall be made in accordance with Standard for Concrete Work -
Materials and Construction".

4.2 Manholes made of pre-cast reinforced sections shall be placed on a concrete base slab and jointed
together with a sand cement mortar of 3:1 mix. An external surround made of 150 mm thick mass
concrete shall then be cast upon completion of the manhole(s).

4.3 The pre-cast reinforced concrete cover slab shall be bedded, with a 3:1 sand cement mortar mix on
the topmost pre-cast section.

4.4 Where the depth of the manhole exceeds 3300 mm as established in the construction drawing, the
chamber shall be completed using a reducing slab and access shaft ring sections up to the underside of
the cover assembly.
5. COVERED CONCRETE CANAL LINING

5.1 Concrete flooring shall have a minimum thickness of 4” reinforced with 12 mm dia. RSB transverse
bars and 10mm dia RSB for Longitudinal.

5.2 Concrete flooring mixture shall be 1:2:4 and shall rest on a well compacted 2” thick gravel bedding

5.3 Concrete canal walling shall be 4” and have vertical reinforcement of 12mm diameter place at 0.40
meters on center with horizontal bars every two layers CHB.

5.4 Concrete wall shall be concrete plastered with a minimum thickness of ½”.

5.5 Concrete cover shall have a minimum thickness of 125mm and reinforced with a 12 mm diameter
with a maximum spacing of 150mm on a transverse direction and 250mm horizontal direction.

6. BACKFILLING

6.1 Backfilling of the pipe trenches, around manholes and concrete septic tanks shall not begin until the
drainage system has been successfully installed and accepted by the owner. Backfilling may be carried
out in sections as work progresses with prior owners approval.

6.2 After inspection being completed, bedding material shall be further placed by hand under the pipe,
equally along both sides of pipe and up to a height 150 mm above the top of pipe and shall be
compacted by hand. Backfilling shall be completed and compacted

6.3 The backfill in trenches crossing existing roads shall be thoroughly compacted and the road
pavement shall be temporarily reinstated and maintained until settlement has finally ceased.

6.4 Backfilling around manholes shall generally be carried out as described for trenches. Care shall also
be taken to raise the fill level equally all around the chamber.

6.5 Minimum thickness of backfilling for Reinforced Concrete Pipe shall be 30 cm well compacted.

7. OUTFALL

7.1 The outfall shall be connected to the existing drainage system of the adjacent subdivision project.
