Process Specification

Machining of Metallic Components 80–T–30–4010

Data Sheet 5
– Face Milling of AL Steels – Issue: 08/04
Page 1 / 1

Contrary and/or in addition to the definitions in the basic instruction, the following specifications shall
apply to mechanical milling as an alternative to chemical milling per 80–T–33–3510:
Mechanical milling can always be applied as alternative to chemical milling per 80–T–33–3510, provided
that the geometry and the tolerated residual wall thickness as specified in the design document can be
achieved. Unless specific tolerances are given in the design document, a tolerance of +– 0,1
0,2
mm applies to
residual wall thickness ”S”.
The tools used must have a corner radius of R w 2 mm. Dry cutting is permissible, provided that all
requirements regarding component quality are fulfilled.
The tool shall enter the component on an inclined path, preferably at a plunge angle of 3°.
If for geometry reasons two or several different tools must be used on one surface to be milled, a line offset
of z v 0,1 mm is permissible (see Figure 1), if the surface to be milled is an area of weight reduction. If the
surface treated is a functional area (mating surface) or if the milled surface is manufactured with only one
tool, the line offset z must not exceed 0,05 mm.

Machining of flat sheets to be formed subsequently is permissible, if the specified tolerances are observed.
The clamping method shall be designed as to ensure that the component or the machine are not damaged by
residual stresses released during machining.
