Summerbridge Hong Kong 2019 Lesson Plan Template

Teacher: Aashna Grewal Course: Forces of Date: 4th July 2019

Nature
Aim/Objective: Students will be able to . . .
Work together to create a model of solids, liquids and gas and differentiate between
the 3 states of matter.
Key Vocabulary:
Molecules
Materials Needed and Physical Classroom Prep:
Legos
Different coloured water in a clear container
Different shaped containers
Procedure: Time:
Do Now/Hook:
Students will be split into small groups or pairs and will be given different
items to act such as various solids, various liquids, various gasses, a solid
molecule, liquid molecule or gas molecule to act as in a game of charades.
The other classmates will have to guess what they are acting as. 5 mins

Direct Instruction/Modeling:
1. Demonstrate how in a container, solids will not fill the container,
but liquids and gasses will.
2. Go through the properties of these states of matter and how the
molecules look and move around in each of the states of matter. 10 mins

Student Practice/Application:
Have the students themselves move around stations where they can play
around with the legos, water and shaping molecules

Lego
 Students can play around with lego blocks to see the material of
solids and how you can combine them together to create new
things
Water
 Take different shaped containers to see how liquids fill up these
containers and experiment with the amount of liquid can fit in a
container and how it varies from other containers
Clay Molding
 Use clay to mold the 3 states of matter to a molecular level and see
the differences between each state of matter. They will be able to 20 mins
show the structure of the molecules in these states of matter and
can compare in what ways they are different in the 3 states as well
as be able to mimic the movement of these states of matters with
the clay.

While they are at the stations they will be given guided questions to
discuss such as “Can you try and explain what you see” or “Is this
interesting to you and if so why?”
5 mins

Wrap up/Closure:
At the end of every lesson the students will write or draw their favourite
moment in the lesson and I will collect all of them and make a book in the
end for all of them to take home. 5 mins

Clean Up
Clear up all the equipment that was left out or used in the lesson.
Homework: N/A
Relevance to SB Goals:
___ English Language Development: Conversation when playing with the water
and legos.
___ Love of Learning: A bunch of workshops to help the children experiment with
fun ways of learning.
___ Building Confidence: Interacting with other students and working together at
the workshops.

Plan for Upcoming Days:

Show the changes that the 3 states of matter go through on a molecular level and then
lead to evaporation which is the start of the water cycle.
