INITIALVERTICAL LOAD TEST ON PILE
COMMENTS
PROCEDURE
GENERAL

1) The testing of the pile will be carried out according to IS:2911 (Part - IV ) - 1985
Correct the code to IS 2911(Part - IV) 2013
In accordance with the relevant portion of the Indian Standard IS 2911 (part - IV)
2) 1985, the the Initial vertical load test shall be carriedout for a test load of at least
two and a half times the working load.

3) The maximum settlement for initial load test shall not exceed 12 mm. CORRECT IT AS 10% OF THE PILE DIA

METHODOLOGY OF TEST

It is proposed to conduct the load test on pile by application of vertical A minimum of four dal guages to be there symitrically palced and
compression loads on the top of hydraulic jack reacting against a platform the datum bar shall be supperted at a minimum distance of 2m
supporting and the settlements will be recorded by suitably positioned dial from the edge of the pile
guages. Maintained load method as detailed in the IS will be followed.

PILE HEAD PREPERATION

The pile head will be chipped off carefully till sound concrete is met with the
projecting reinforcement bars will be cut off and the top finished smooth and
levelled with plaster of paris so as to obtain a horizontal surface. On this prepared
pile head, a base plate will be placed to receive the jack base.
KENTELEDGE
The kenteledge will consist of bags ( half filled with sand) stacked over a
platform built up of rolled steel beams. The platform will rest over the cribs, steel
structurals or sleepers. For the arrangement of test pile, details are given in the
concerned diagram.
SETTLEMENT OBSERVATIONS

1) The load application and settlement observations will be made at the pile top

Settlements will be recorded using three dial guages with a least count 0.01mm A minimum of four dal guages to be there symitrically palced and the datum bar
. The guage will be positioned at an equal distance around the piles and will be shall be supperted at a minimum distance of 2m from the edge of the pile
2)
held by datum bars resting on immovable supports at equal distance from the
peripheral edge
LOAD APPLICATION

The test load will be applied by means of hydraulic jack of sufficient capacity
( with a remote control system ). The jack will pull against the jacking girder
1) The efficiency of the jack to be tested before the load test
assembly / bearing against the loaded platform. The jacking grider assembly will
consist of rolled steel beam/plated beams with the flanges well braced.

The test will be carried out by applying a series of vertical incremental loads,
each increment being about 20% of the assumed safe load on the pile. The
2) pressure will be read from pressure guage attached to the hydraulic pump. At
each stage of loading the guage pressure multiplied by the ram area of jack will
be applied load.

At each stage, the loading will be maintained till such time, the rate of movement
Correct this as per the latest code IS 2911 part IV 2013, rate of movement of the
3) of pile head is not more than 0.1mm in the first 30 minutes or 0.2mm in the first
pile head not more than 0.2 mm/hr or 2hr
one hour or for a maximum of 2 hours, whichever occurs first.

Time and Settlement observation will be made at the commencement and

completion of each stage of incremental loading . The settlement observations
4)
will also be continued at about 15 minutes intervals during the period when the
applied load is constant.
When the loading has reached 2.5 times of safe capacity of pile, it will be
5) maintained for a period of 24 hours. The loading will then be brought down
gradually in stages by releasing the jacking pressure progressively.
REPORTS

time, dial guage readings and the settlements.
