satellite application that

benefits Singapore &

southeast asia
Weather
■ Background:
- There are two basic types of weather satellites Geostationary orbit and Polar orbit.
- The first weather satellite was launched by the US, named Vanguard 2 launched in
1959.
- The satellite around Singapore is called Polar orbiting satellite.
- In 2016, Singapore made 6 satellites and were successfully launched into space from
India. These satellites captures images about once every 100 minutes. http://education.abc.net.au/ho

■ Objective: To better improve the accuracy of the weather forecast.

■ Mission:
- In May 2017, Singapore suffered Hazy weather for a few weeks. This was because
Riau, on the island of Sumatra, slash and burn lands to make way for crops. Therefore,
the weather forecast in Singapore has to be as accurate as possible in order for the
people to be more aware of their health and on hold their outdoor activities.

■ Benefit:
- Agencies of disaster prevention can make better decisions and react more quickly to
weather events to keep people and property safe.
Better plane tracking system
Background: Singapore is Asia’s leading aviation hub that plays an important role in handling
the growth of aviation in Asia due to its strategic geographical location and excellent
connectivity to the rest of the world.

However, four years have passed since the world’s greatest aviation mystery, Malaysia Airlines
370 (MH370) departing from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing lost contact with the air traffic control and
mysteriously vanished. The fruitless search for the disappearance of Boeing 777-200 has been
also a constant reminder of inadequate tracking.
Mission: Singapore which is one of the busiest airports by international passenger and cargo
traffic should improve its aircraft tracking system so that such aforementioned case would
never happen again in the future. Therefore, tracking system must meet minimal set of
requirements that any tracking system must meet.
Benefit: Allowing airlines to decide the best solution to track their aircraft.
Limitation of Current Technology
Better plane tracking system

This is our current normal

aircraft tracking.

Also, highlights from MH370

case, we can learnt that our
current tracking system can
only track where does the
plane heading but it is not able
to address the accident. It
might be a reason why the
plane vanished without traces.
Proposed Solution
Better plane tracking system

1. Aircraft to carry autonomous distress tracking devices, which can autonomously

transmit location information at least once every minute in distress circumstances.

2. All aircraft over open ocean report their position every 15 minutes.

3. Satellites of the tracking system to be improved to capture the image in particular

areas, especially those remote areas (e.g. oceans).

4. ‘Online’ black-box that would send any information to apps like Flight Radar
Tracking through systems like ACARS and SATCOM.
Resource Satellite
Objective:
- To better survey and study the earth’s resources.
Mission:
- It is able to see the stratigraphic structures, and can investigate the
resources of crops, singapore forests, oceans and air. For forecast
and identify crop harvest, investigate and forest various natural
disasters.
Benefit :
- To build a building with good foundation. With the acceleration of
urbanization, the promotion of standard of living and the
development of national economy, the requirement of the residence
of quality and quantity has been enhancing, this will benefit
singapore the do more investigation on the ground foundation
before they build some skyscraper.
- To build more MRT lines underground. It is more convenient for
people to take traffic. Because nowadays, as the singapore
population and vehicles increase, urban districts seem to be more
crowded.
Design of satellites

■ Camera [zone camera]

■ Weather sensors [Rain Sensor, Thunderstorm sensor, etc]
Additional consideration

■ The cost of building the satellite itself is around $40 million, with having it to launch
with a space plane would have an additional $50 million.
■ This project would last up to 7 years as we will launch again a much more advanced
satellite after figuring out any failures after the time-scale.
■ The risk of launching the satellites is that the satellites might be destroyed or
explode during the launch
■ The reliability is that the satellites would be much more affordable then normal
satellite inclusive of the launch.
Launching of Satellites

India, Sriharikota is the place chosen where the satellite would be launched. The
reasons are:
■ Due to the location near to the equator and the satellite is launched eastward so that
the initial boost of the satellite would be equal to the earth’s velocity. The place itself
is build on the east-coast so that when there is a fail it does not fall on built-up
hinterland.
■ The place is very accessible by air, water or land. The site is more prone for accidents
thus, it is a remote place away from inhabitants.
■ Lastly, climate. Based on research, the site have perfect weather for 10 months
except for October and November which will have heavy rain, This causes more
dates to be chosen to launch the satellite.
Our Design VS Current Technology

1. Our satellite will be much more advanced as we will be able to detect weather
accurately than the current technology.

2. Our satellite are also able to detect ship/ plane wrecks much more accurately by
giving the coordinates of where last signal is detected.
