1. State and review the definition of translation given by the two experts. (20 points)
Answer
Yevgeny Yevtushenko translation is like a woman. If it is beautiful, it is not faithful. If it is
faithful, it is most certainly not beautiful.
Wilss (1982:3) translation is a transfer process which aims at the transformation of a written
source language text (SL) into an optimally equivalent target language text (TL), and which
requires the syntactic, the semantic, and the pragmatic understanding and analytical
processing of style and meaning.

2. Study this translation

ST: Permisipaksayamaukebelakang
TT: Excuse me sir, I want to go to the back

ST: PA: Pagi Pak Jon? Kemananih?

ST: PJ: Ah biasa.
TT: PA: Good morning Mr. Jon? Where do you
TT: PJ: It’s common.

What‘s wrong with the translations? How should we translate them? Explain your reasons?
(20)
Answer
In my analysis in the first conversation it used word for word translation. In which the SL
word order is preserved and the words translated singly by their most common meanings.
There is no faithful problem because as long as not out of the context or SL to TL and the
word meaning still can be understand.
In the second conversation they used free translation it produces the TL text without the
style, form, or content of the original. Thus translation should be used literla translation.
For example:

ST PA: Pagi Pak Jon? Kemananih?
ST PJ: ahh biasa
TT PA: Good mornign Mr. Jon. Where did you go?
TT PJ: Like I always do

3. Study the following ST and its translation text. Choose the phenomena. Classify the
technique of translation used in the following texts. Explain the reason. (30 point)
Source Text Target Text
“I’m a little late,” the woman said, her voice "Akuagakterlambat,"
unassuming. “I have a breakfast meeting perempuanituberkatadengan nada datar
with Senator Sexton.” "Akuadajanjimakanpagibersama Senator
Sexton."
“Dad, I really haven’t had time to call him. "Dad, akubenar-benartidak punya
And I wish you’d stop trying to—” waktuuntukmeneleponnya. Dan kuharap kau
menghentikanupayamuuntuk—"

Answer
The phenomena in the first sentence maybe the word choice “a little”should be “a bit”
because the word “a bit” is commonly used by people when want to say the overdue. About
the target text in the first sentence the translation technique was used word for word
translation it can bee seen the ST is related the same to the terget text the way how words
choice in the target thext.
The phenomena in the second sentence is from the target text. In the source text has been
appropriate but in the target text there is something mistake this sentence use literal
translation but unfortunetly in the last word in the target text is wrong. It can be have maybe
to faithful with the source text. Thus sentence should translates like this “dan aku harap kamu
juga berhenti mencobanya”.

4. Based on question No. 3, how do you rate the translation quality? How to improve them?
How could the problem be used in teaching translation? (15 points)

Answer
The translation quality is quite and almost good there is just a bit problem about the source
language to the target language sometimes the word choice is not and cannot accepted because
out of the meaning context. To improve we have to pay attention with the word choice and the
most important things are grammar and our understanding about the meaning of the source
language. So, we can easyly to translate to the target language. Grammatical, word choice, and
understand the meaning of text can be material in the teaching translation process. We can use
like word choice how to make decision when we want to chose a better word to translate to the
target language and not to far from the grammatical.
