Assignment 3
Date September 14, 2016

Answer all.

1. Determine
 whether this is a quadratic spline function:
 x if x ∈ (−∞, 1]
f (x) = − 12 (2 − x)2 + 32 if x ∈ [1, 2]
 3
2 if x ∈ [2, ∞).

2. Find the natural cubic spline function whose knots are −1, 0 and 1, and that takes the values S(−1) =
13, S(0) = 7 and S(1) = 9.
 3
x if x ∈ [−1, 0]
3. Consider f (x) =
a + bx + cx2 + dx3 if x ∈ [0, 1].
What value of (a, b, c, d) makes this a cubic spline?
4. Let f : [a, b] → R be a cubic polynomial and S : [a, b] → R be the cubic spline interpolation of f at
distinct points a = x0 < x1 < · · · < xn = b with S 00 (a) = f 00 (a) and S 00 (b) = f 00 (b). Let ci be the
coefficient of x3 term in restriction of S(x) on [xi−1 , xi ) for i = 1, 2, . . . , n respectively. Then show that
(maxi ci )(mini ci ) > 0. [Hint: use uniqueness of cubic spline]
5. Let f : [a, b] → R be in C 4 [a, b] and f (xi ) be given for xi = a + b−a
2m i where i = 0, 1, 2, . . . , 2m. Assume
Rb
that I1 (f ) and I2 (f ) denote the numerical approximation of I(f ) = a f (x)dx using the trapezoidal
rule and Simpson rule respectively with those 2m + 1 number of data points.
(a) Show I1 (x2 ) > I2 (x2 ).
(b) Write down the expression for I1 (f ) and the expression of I(f ) − I1 (f ).
(c) Write down the expression for I2 (f ).
