Pre-Calculus Function and Graphs: A Graphing Approach (5th Edition) By Larson, Hosteller and
Edwards. Copyright 2008by Houghton Mifflin Company.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to develop the necessary math skills and understanding for entry into a
calculus course at the University of Liberia with emphasis on those elementary functions which are
of fundamental interest in calculus. These include functions and relations, polynomial functions,
rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions and the trigonometric functions. Special
attention to graphing.

PRE-REQUISITE
Successful Passed in the University of Liberia entrance exam

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of the course, the students shall be able to identify, define, describe, write, graph,
distinguish, solve, and optimize, problems involving: set of real numbers, symbols of quantification,
inequalities, order relations, interval notations, linear and combined inequalities in one variable,
absolute value equations and inequalities, rational and quadratic inequalities, relations and
functions, the Cartesian Coordinate system, algebra of functions, polynomial functions, linear
functions, quadratic functions polynomial functions of higher degree, quadratic relation, conic
sections, circle, parabola, ellipse, hyperbola, systems of equations, piecewise functions, general
piecewise functions, absolute value functions, greatest integer functions, exponential and
logarithmic functions, solving exponential equations, one-to-one and inverse functions, logarithmic
functions, exponential-logarithmic equation conversion (and vice versa), laws of logarithms,
solving logarithmic equations, trigonometric function, rays and angles, trigonometric ratios and
right triangles, special angles, degree-radians conversions, trigonometric functions and their graphs,
fundamental trigonometric identities, sum and difference angles identities, double and half angle
identities
