European Standards Organizations (ESOs)

CENELEC is a European regional standards organization that together with its sister
organizations CEN, the European Committee for Standardization, and ETSI, the
European Telecommunications Standards Institute, compose the so-called and
known European Standards Organizations (ESOs) that are officially recognised by
the European Commission and act as a European platform through which European
Standards are developed.

In the European Union, only standards developed by CEN, CENELEC and ETSI are
recognised as 'European Standards'. Hence, CENELEC closely cooperates with CEN
and ETSI; working jointly in the interest of European harmonization, creating both
standards requested by the market and harmonized standards in support of European
legislation.

CEN, CENELEC, ETSI are the regional mirror bodies to their international counterparts,
i.e. ISO (the International Organization for Standardization), IEC (the International
Electrotechnical Commission) and ITU-T (the International Telecommunication Union,
telecommunication standardization sector) respectively.

CEN

The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) is a business catalyst

in Europe, removing trade barriers for European stakeholders such as
industry, public administration, service providers, consumers and other
stakeholders. Its mission is to foster the European economy in global
trading, the welfare of European citizens, and the environment. Through its services
CEN provides a platform for the development of European Standards and other
specifications.

CEN’s 34 National Members work together to develop voluntary European Standards

(ENs) in various sectors to build a European Internal Market for goods and services and
to position Europe in the global economy. By supporting research, and helping
disseminate innovation, standards are a powerful tool for economic growth. More than
60.000 technical experts as well as business federations, consumer and other societal
interest organizations are involved in the CEN network that reaches over 480 million
people.

ETSI

ETSI produces globally-applicable standards for Information

and Communications Technologies (ICT), including fixed,
mobile, radio, converged, aeronautical, broadcast and
internet technologies and is officially recognized by the European Union as a European
Standards Organization. ETSI is an independent, not-for-profit association whose 740
member companies and organizations, drawn from 62 countries across 5 continents
worldwide, determine the ETSI work programme and participate directly in its work.

About us
All of the products and services we buy and use in our everyday lives have to meet certain standards of safety and
quality. In Europe, these standards are developed and agreed by the three officially recognized European
Standardization Organizations: the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the European Committee for
Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).

The close collaboration between CEN and CENELEC was consolidated at the start of 2010 by the creation of a
common CEN-CENELEC Management Centre (CCMC) in Brussels.
By setting common standards that are applied across the whole of the European single market, CEN and CENELEC
ensure the protection of consumers, facilitate cross-border trade, ensure the interoperability of products, encourage
innovation and technological development, include environmental protection and enable businesses to grow.
Products and services that meet these European Standards (ENs) can be offered and sold in all of the participating
countries.
CEN and CENELEC bring together the national standards agencies of 34 countries. Our network involves business
federations, commercial and consumer organizations, environmental groups and other societal stakeholders. More
than 60,000 technical experts from industry, research, academia and other backgrounds are directly involved in our
work.

Together, CEN and CENELEC provide a platform for the development of European Standards and other technical
specifications across a wide range of sectors. We work closely with the European Commission to ensure that
standards correspond with any relevant EU legislation.

CEN and CENELEC also cooperate with respectively the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and
the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to reach agreements on common standards that can be applied
throughout the whole world, thereby facilitating international trade.
